The course in Midway, open to the public, has added an on-cart on-cart GPS system. It's believed to be only the second course in Utah with the device. "It's the biggest thing we've done (this summer)," said club pro Rick Rockwood said. "It does distances, has advertising for our sponsors and can keep track of tournament scores. It's got some pretty good tools and people are really enjoying it." Why'd Homestead add it? "We wanted to set ourselves apart again," Rockwood said. Golfers will need good tools (clubs) to swing around a challenging chal-lenging course. The Snake Creek Valley course offers a variety va-riety of challenges for all levels. Regular players, including Rockwood, are likely to love and hate No. 18, a long par 4 that measures about 448 yards and forces players to hit uphill and into the wind while crossing cross-ing a hazard twice. The Snake Creek runs down the right side the whole way. The hole, like No. 9, ends on a 100-yard hourglass-shaped green that has two levels which are shared. Homestead has had slower business so far because of all the rainy days. Unlike many courses, though, Rockwood said it has survived and thrived in the wet conditions. Nebeker said, "Getting close to region she just really started to get hot. She was on every game. If it wasn't with hits, she got hit by more pitches than anyone on our team. She just did whatever it took to get on base. Bottom line." In the field Fiso says she was also nervous, starting for the first time as varsity catcher, but through hard work she quickly adapted to that. Nebeker said to get through her nervousness, Fiso spent an entire Saturday with her coach firing the pitching machine at her to get her comfortable with blocking pitches. "That's the type of character she has. She wants to be the best she can," Nebeker said. "Of course she's got the natural natu-ral gift, whether it be athletics athlet-ics or academics, but she just works hard. Bottom line." As one of the few seniors, Fiso had to be a leader and also a liaison with new coaching staffs. While basketball was her first experience in the role, by the time softball season arrived, ar-rived, she was well used to it. "I felt like I had to really teach the younger girls. I was probably a good example," FLso said. "I had people to look up to so I think it's good for them to look up to somebody." That's when Fiso humbling trails off, not wanting to sound like she's talking herself up. No problem. She's got others to do that for her. "She's really driven," Nebeker Ne-beker said. "She's almost a perfectionist where shr- wants to do things right. There's the big improvement from her freshman fresh-man year to her senior year, but even just from the first day of tryouts until the end, she made big leaps. I think that's just a credit to her hard work." Besides her athletic success, Jen did equally well in the classroom, garnering two Aca: demic All-State awards. While the basketball honors were a cinch, Fiso said she was a bit apprehensive about her chances with the softball award. "I actually got an 'A-' my third term and it was my first 'A-' ever and it was really dramatic," she said. "But I got over it. I was worried alxmt the softball one because I got the 'A-' so I wasn't sure if I'd make it. But I did so I was really re-ally happy." That success academically is also part of what made Jen appealing to CEU coach Dave Paur. At the end of basketball season, Fiso knew she wauled to play somewhere in college, but wasn't quite sure of the possibilities, she said. That's when she heard from Paur. Just prior to the start of softball season, Jen made the trip to Price to practice with Paur's team. That's all it took and, combined with her solid academics, received an offer to play at CFU METAL ROOFING & SIDING! PROVO "Orem High is missing out now that she's gone," Nelx?ker said. "She'll succeed in college. Keep an eye out because great things are going to come of her." Fiso said, "I always kind of wanted to play, but I didn't really realize what my option were. I'm excited I gel to play somewhere." Kven if that somewhere is the small town of lYice, where the college enrollment is Ix-low 3,(MM). Not that Jen minds, saying she sometimes wished she'd played in at a smaller high schx)l to get the chance to know more people. "I always thought it'd be fun to come from a small town," she said. "(IVice) is kind of small, but I've been there a lot because I go there every summer sum-mer for a basketball tournament. tourna-ment. I kind of know my way around a little bit. It kind of grows on you. I'm sure it'll be lots of fun." The adds, "They have a Wal-Mart, Wal-Mart, so that's good." With school starling on Aug. 15, she's already been to orientation and now has just a month to prepare. "Everybody tells me, 'I won't lie to you. It's hard at first, but you'll get used to it,' " Fiso said. "I know it will be hard because be-cause I'm a homebody, but I'm sure I'll get used to it." STOCK COLORS 590 S(ft WHITE - GREEN LT.
