Show Page B4 Thursday, January 22, 2004 Times Newspaper PASSION GOOD START continued from Page Bl just kept improving her skills until she reached high school. In the meantime, she dabbled dab-bled some in soccer and softball, but quit because basketball was the sport she loved. This year she's developed into one of Timpanogos' leading scorers, helping the T-wolves T-wolves to an 11-3 record, surpassing last year's nine win total. As a senior, she plays a key leadership role on the team, helping the younger players and providing encouragement, although seeing her off the court it'd be hard to guess at her intensity. o. i L : i hj jji owiicinng over to uaa moae, t Robert says, "She's really shy. When I ' 01 1 V ICLIO VJ 1 1 1 1 J I 1C UIL. DilV o 1U11 lJ around, just a warm personality." And on the court, that shows. "That's one of her places she feels very comfortable. She just learned you've got to go for it when you're out there." But, just because she's one of the top scorers and the coach's daughter, doesn't mean she hasn't spent time on the bench. In the past month Kristen has sat out plenty not due to her play, but because of one play, and when asked about it, Kristen winces. In the T-wolves' has 7 rDec. 1 8 t I y J 1 ' Jr game at American fork, in tne second quar ter she tried to drive baseline l i wnen sne was bumped by her defender. She landed badly, injuring injur-ing her left ankle. But while she lay on the ground, it wasn't pain consuming her, but rather anger. "I was so mad," she says. "It wasn't like, that it hurt, but that I couldn't play. I was just so mad couldn't play." Her dad said Kristen was especially angry at the American Fork trainer, who told her she'd have to sit out the remainder of the game, but it was probably a good thing she did. The diagnosis was torn ligaments in her left ankle, for which she sat out nearly a month. But the timing could have been worse. With the injury coming just before Christmas break, Kristen only had to sit out four games. During her time off, she was able to rest and work on rehabbing the ankle, although Robert said everyday she'd want to be back, saying, "Maybe tomorrow." The time finally came just over a week ago against Pleasant Grove in the T-wolves' Region VII opener. But, sitting on the bench for four games, did she learn anything? s "Yeah, I don't like sit ting on the bench, she said. So now she plays, trying to ignore the pain, which of course is better than the alternative of having to sit out the entire season. i t is, but if I wouldn't have been able to play, it would nave been so hard," Kristen said, then recounts her ultimate fear. "When it first happened I thought I was done. I was just scared I wouldn't get to play the rest of the season. It's my senior year and I was so excited to play, but I'm glad to be back." Her team probably is too. Two games into the region schedule and Timpanogos is 2-0. Kristen has averaged 11.5 points in those two games, placing photo by Landon Olson Times Newspaper "Yeah, I didn't like sitting on the bench." Timpanogos' Kristen Louder on if she learned anything while injured I 1 ... -a im RTlft r I !P11I if 11; k ( ' J V v t ' .... Its hard as V I her second on the team in scoring. "It's awesome. She's a really good player," said Timpanogos forward Amber Nielsen. "Her shot is so good and we need her, basically. She makes everything." Kristen's response to that is a laugh. "I don't know who they're looking at. I miss," she says. But even when she doesn't score, she's there on the other end of the court, sparking the defense and picking up steals. "She has pretty long arms, we used to call her Gumby," Robert said. "She's got good arms and she anticipates well and she's able to get some steals and play in some passing lanes and get some easy baskets that help out." That defensive prowess on display last Fridayn the T-wolves region game against. Lone Peak. In the second quarter, Kristen and the T-wolves' press were able to spark an explosive run, grabbing steals and scoring 11 points in just over a minute to blow the game open. When discussing it, Kristen perks right up and the passion and excitement shine in her eyes. "Oh that was fun. It's fun just to pump them up and get them all excited and get the adrenaline adren-aline going and just keep it up." She'll also be looking for the team to keep it up in the final six region games. If the T-wolves can finish in the top three, they'll earn a trip to the state tournament, which is a big goal after losing in a play-in game last season. After that, Kristen's future, unlike her shot, is uncertain. She's been applying to universities, universi-ties, but isn't sure where she wants to go or if shell have the opportunity to play basketball. She's getting a good start on college, though, taking several AP classes, including English and Calculus, leaving her with little spare time by the time she practices, does homework, and spends time at home watching film and going over her game "School and basketball. That's pretty much my life," she said. Not that she's complaining, because basketball basket-ball is her passion. And, while the future may be up in the air, one thing is for sure whatever what-ever Kristen decides to do, shell find some way to keep playing basketball. Profile Name: Kristen Louder Position: Guard Height: 5-foot-9 Class: Senior Region points per game: 11.5 continued from Page B2 With the foul trouble, though (Martin fouled out in the fourth), Louder said he may have to work on trying players in different positions in practice. "We had to play weird lineups," he said. "Some of those players don't play those positions ever in practice, so I guess maybe we're going to have to if we're going to hack everybody every-body every time we play." In addition to Martin, guard Mandy Valora was in foul trouble early, picking pick-ing up her fourth and having hav-ing to leave the game at the beginning of the third. And having those players out did make a difference for the T-wolves. "Candice had to sit out. She's our best rebounder," Nielsen said. "I ended up playing more of the five. It was different but I think we adjusted pretty well." She seemed to anyway, as she led the team and had a game-high 15 points. Harris added 13 while Louder pitched in 11. Leading Lone Peak was Murdoch, who had 15. The Timberwolves have been off since Friday, but are back in action Thursday at home in a cross-town region battle against Mountain View. Before Mountain View's game Tuesday against Pleasant Grove, the teams were tied at the top of Region VII at 2-0.
