SUU Host In what many consider to be the championship playoffs of the junior high and high school theatre world, over 2,00 students are expected to arrive in Cedar City for the twenty-seventh annual Shakespeare Competition on Friday and Saturday, October 10 and 11. The competition, hosted by the Utah Shakespearean Festival and Southern Utah University, gives students the opportunity to perform monologues and duo-, trio-, and ensemble-scenes from any Shakespeare play. The performers are then adjudicated in three rounds by different judges. Winners receive various vari-ous awards and scholarships to attend SUU or actor training courses hosted by the Festival. Fred C. Adams, festival founder and executive producer, and Ray Jones of Provo High School originally organized the Shakespeare Competition in 1977. "The purpose of the competition is to expose students and teachers to the value and quality of Shakespeare's words and language in a positive and artistic manner," said Adams. "This is an opportunity to apply the basic dramatic dra-matic skills they are learning to Shakespeare's literature."
