Show Times Newspaper Thursday, September 18, 2003 Page A3 11 a n 0 1 91103 27-year-old man, of Springville, was stopped yesterday morning in the car he was driving for committing com-mitting a traffic violation. He was driving on a suspended sus-pended driver's license and was arrested for that offense. During a search of his car after the arrest, the officer located metham-phetamine metham-phetamine and drug paraphernalia. para-phernalia. Hanks was stopped in a drug-free zone, which enhances the drug crimes, and was booked into the Utah County Jail. 91203 A locked car was broken bro-ken into sometime Wednesday night in the area of 400 S. Orem Blvd and a stereo was stolen from the car. A witness called in a possible drunk driver yesterday yes-terday just after Noon driving northbound on State Street. Officer Ryan Porter spotted the truck and stopped a 46-year-old man, of Orem, at 1000 N. State. He was arrested and booked into the Orem holding facility on felony DUI charges because he has already been arrested and convicted for DUI several sev-eral times in past five years. I guess it's no surprise sur-prise that he was also driving driv-ing on a suspended driver's dri-ver's license. He was charged with that too. A 53-year-old Provo woman was seen driving on Main Street Yesterday evening at about 7:30 PM by another motorist. The woman's car struck a construction con-struction barrel and then hit a parked car at about 1100 S. Main. When officer offi-cer Chris Watson arrived, he noted the woman couldn't could-n't walk, could barely talk, and had a hard time staying stay-ing awake. He suspected she might be either diabetic diabet-ic or overdosed on pain medication. The woman said she was diabetic, but there was also a lot of medication in her purse. She was taken to the hospital hos-pital where a test was performed per-formed that indicated excess pain medication was more than likely the cause of her condition.' She was cited for DUI and left in the care of the hospital hos-pital staff. Sometimes officers take calls that leave them scratching their heads. Take last night for instance. An officer was dispatched to check on a woman living in Orem whose father had not heard from her for 10 days. He was worried. The officer offi-cer spent the better part of an hour tracking the woman down and finally found her at work. The officer then went back to the station to call dad and let him know his daughter was alive and well. Imagine the officer's surprise sur-prise when he found that dad also lives in Orem. No. There was no mention of the father being disabled dis-abled and unable to check on his daughter himself. I can only hope there was a better reason than not wanting to miss reruns of M.A.S.H although Lt. Doug Edwards Public Information Officer PUBLIC SAFETY Seinfeld might qualify. 91503 Officers arrested a 49-year-old woman on Saturday night after she assaulted a friend at her apartment with a hammer. The victim was taken to the hospital with a bleeding bleed-ing wound. She was found by officers hiding underneath under-neath a cardboard box in a neighbor's backyard. She was booked into the Utah County Jail on Class A Misdemeanor assault charges, and two warrants for her arrest. Alcohol was involved in the situation. Officer Craig Martinez stopped a car for a traffic violation on Sunday morning at about 1600 N. 1-15. While talking talk-ing to the driver about the violation, Officer Martinez noticed the passenger wasn't was-n't wearing a seat belt. The officer had a 39-year-old man, of Arizona, step out of the car. He was wearing a fanny pack and Officer Martinez could see a faint outline of a gun. Officer Martinez asked him about weapons and he confirmed that he did have a handgun in the fanny pack. The fanny pack was taken by the Officer for safety reasons and a loaded 9mm handgun was found inside, along with an Arizona Concealed Weapons Permit in his name. Unfortunately for him, his Arizona permit isn't legal in Utah, nor was the bag of methampheta-mine methampheta-mine that was also in the fanny pack. He was arrested for possession of Meth and carrying a concealed, con-cealed, loaded firearm. More meth was found inside the car in the driver's dri-ver's possession. A 39-year-old man, of Arizona, was also arrested for possession pos-session of Methamphetamine. Both men were booked into the Utah County Jail. A portable CD player and 30 CD's were stolen sometime Saturday night from an unlocked car parked in the area of 1400 N. 600 W. Two vehicles were stolen Saturday night from the area of 1200 N. 600 W. Probably by the same person or persons who stole the CD's above. Both vehicles were Chevy trucks and both had keys that had been left in them. One of the trucks was located Sunday afternoon by Sgt. Dennis Cordner in the Stone Brook Condominiums at 1500 N. 1200 W. The other truck, a white Chevy club cab is still missing. 91603 Approximately $1000 worth of air tools were stolen from a truck over the weekend parked in the area of 1400 N. State. 14 storage units were broken into sometime Sunday night at the Rocky Mountain Storage at 1020 N. Geneva Road. Renters are being contacted to determine what is missing. miss-ing. The only items known to be missing at this time is a number of miscella neous hand tools taken from one storage unit. Sometimes even us supposed experts make mistakes when we don't deal with something every day. I did that in reporting on the arrest of Robert Randol this past weekend. He was carrying a concealed con-cealed firearm and had an Arizona Concealed Weapons Permit. I've since done some checking and found that Utah does honor concealed carry permits from other states. My statement in this morning's update "that the Arizona permit was illega in Utah" was in error. This won't negate the arrest made on Randol, however, because of the Meth he was carrying with his gun. We investigated a reported suicide call yesterday yes-terday just after 5:00 PM at 1357 S. 460 W. (Pinnacle Apartments). It was determined shortly after police officers and paramedics para-medics arrived that the young man involved was the son of U.S. Senator, Gordon Smith, from Oregon. 21-year-old Garrett L. Smith's (DOB 9-9-81) was found by a friend after Garrett apparently committed suicide by hanging himself inside his apartment. Garrett was last seen alive on Sunday afternoon by a neighbor who saw him playing with his dog outside the apartment apart-ment where he lived. Garrett had been down for some time before he was found. Garrett was the only resident of the apartment. apart-ment. The friend had become concerned Monday afternoon after Garrett failed to show up for a class at UVSC. The friend was concerned because Garrett had been depressed and made recent statements about committing suicide. There does not appear to be any foul play involved at this time, but the incident inci-dent is still under investigation investi-gation by our department. There was a note to his family located in the apartment. Once Garrett's relationship relation-ship to Senator Smith was determined, contact was made with authorities in Maryland for assistance in delivering the message of Garrett's passing this his parents. They are naturally natural-ly heartbroken. Suicides cases such as this one are sad and unfortunate, unfor-tunate, and not typically reported on by the media, however, because of Garrett's father's position in the government, I suspect sus-pect this will draw media attention. I am certain that sensitive treatment of this unfortunate tragedy would be greatly appreciated appreci-ated by the Smith family. FALL FURNACE SPECIALS! Get .
