The concerts are a cultural gift to the community by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and are free and open to the public. Following standard concert protocol, children under eight are encouraged to visit other venues. Friday, August 1- French pianist Bertrand Giraud will play three sonnets by Liszt and Brahms' Sonate No. 3, Op 5. Winner of a number of international prizes and competitions, Giraud has recorded chamber music and operetta. In this concert season, Giraud will perform in Europe, Asia and America. Saturday, August 2 Spanish soprano Marta de Castro will sing a program of Wolf's Spanisches Liederuch, Poulenc's Trois Chansons De F. Garcia Lorca, Grandados' Coleccion de Tonadillas, and Turina's Poema En Forma De Canciones. Well-schooled in Spanish conservatories and winner of a number of Spanish singing competitions, de Castro recently performed per-formed in Israel's Blumenthal Festival. "Concerts in the Park" The popular Concerts in the Park continue throughout through-out August. Held at Brigham Young Historic Park at the southeast corner of State Street and 2nd Avenue in Salt Lake City, the performances are free and do not require tickets. August concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. All ages are welcome. Free parking is available (enter at 59 East North Temple street). Chairs accommodate about 600 or bring blankets for lawn seating. Friday, August 1 Salt Lake Scots Pipe Band This bagpipe band plays Celtic and Scottish tunes, drum salutes and stirring marches. Tuesday, August 5 New Zealand-American Society Maori Cultural Group These New Zealanders, who live in Salt Lake City, present traditional Maori songs, stories and war dances. Oliver, son of Viola I. and Ernest H. Oliver of Orem recently returned from the Middle East while assigned to Inshore Boat Unit 17, homebased in San Diego. Oliver's unit provided security and protection to United States and coalition ships as they transited to and from port, loaded military mili-tary equipment and brought needed humanitarian humanitar-ian supplies to the Iraqi Jared Wood graduates from basic training and AIT Army National Guard Pvt. Jared A. Wood has graduated from One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at the U.S. Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. The training consisted of basic military training and advanced individual indi-vidual training (AIT). During basic training, the trainee received instruction instruc-tion in drill and ceremonies, military customs and courtesies, cour-tesies, map reading, tactics, basic rifle marksmanship, physical fitness, field training, train-ing, and first aid. The recruit developed combat skills and handled various weapons available to the infantry soldier. During AIT, the soldier Mosiah Gonzalez joins United States Army Mosiah E. Gonzalez has joined the United States Army under the Delayed Entry Program.. The program pro-gram gives young men and women the opportunity to delay entering active duty for up to one year. The enlistment gives the new soldier the option to learn a new skill, travel and become eligible to receive as much as $50,000 toward a college education. After completion of basic military training, soldiers receive Thomas Adams graduates from basic military training Army Spec. Thomas V. Adams has graduated from One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at the U.S. Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. The training consisted of basic military training and advanced individual training train-ing (AIT). During basic training, the trainee received instruction instruc-tion in drill and ceremonies, military customs and courtesies, cour-tesies, map reading, tactics, basic rifle marksmanship, physical fitness, field training, train-ing, and first aid.
