There were 98 drill teams that participated from all over the U.S. and the level of competition was very high. Mrs. Woodhouse says, "She is very pleased with the results of this competition. The girls practice many hours, often arriving at school by 6:00 in the morning. They were rewarded re-warded for their hard work and dedication." Orem Nursing appoints new administrator Orem Nursing and Rehabilitation Rehabilita-tion is pleased to announce the appointment of Jery Vaculin as administrator. Mr. Vaculin has over ten years of experience in the long term care field, and has served as an administrator in Utah and California. Cali-fornia. Vaculin is a graduate of Utah State University and has a Masters Degree in Psychology. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Utah Health Care Association, and is a member mem-ber of the American College of Health Care Administrators. Vaculin is pleased to be joining join-ing the excellent team of professional profes-sional caregivers at Orem Nursing Nurs-ing and Rehab. Orem Nursing and Rehab is also pleased to announce the schedule of events celebrating National Nursing Home Week, May 9-15. This year's theme is "A Celebration of Life".. The week's events begin on Mother's Day with a Mother's Day Tea, for the mothers residing at the building build-ing and their families. Monday will have kick-off ceremonies cer-emonies at 9:30 a.m. and then a brunch for the residents, visitors and staff. Tuesday is patient day with assorted activities capped off with a barbecue for the residents and their families. Wednesday a carnival will be held and all are invited. During May-StrokeAwareness Month and every day, theAmeri-can theAmeri-can Heart Association wants everyone ev-eryone to know that when it comes to treating stroke every second counts. Stroke is a medical medi-cal emergency and you should call 911! Here are the warning signs of stroke: Sudden numbness or weakness weak-ness of face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body. Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, diz-ziness, loss of balance or coordination coordi-nation Sudden severe headaches with no known cause If you notice one or more of these symptoms, call 911. Every second counts. Treatment can be more effective if given quickly. Early detection and immediate treatment of stroke may prevent some brain injury. Tissue plasminogen plasmi-nogen activator (tPA), a drug that may help reduce disability from stroke by dissolving a clot that causes blockage. To be most effective ef-fective the drug must be administered admin-istered within three hours after the onset of stroke symptoms. "Immediate medical attention ALE is vital in reducing injury to the brain when a stroke occurs," said Salt Lake City neurologist Gregory Gre-gory Call, M.D. "It can make the difference between life or death and in the quality of life for a stroke survivor. Everyone should learn the warning signs of stroke." A stroke is similar to a heart attack. It occurs when a blood vessel bringing oxygen and nutrients nu-trients to the brain bursts or is clogged by a blood clot. This blockage deprives the brain of oxygen. Without oxygen, the nerve cells in that area can't function and die within minutes. Sometimes a series of "mini" strokes, known as TIA's occur, days, weeks or even months before be-fore a major stroke. TIA's, result when a blood clot or other particle par-ticle temporarily clogs an artery SJ interrupting the blood supply to- -the brain. . , ; Support is paramount to stroke recovery.
