Kathryn Thompson Lee celebrates 90th birthday 4 KATHRYN THOMPSON LEE Kathryn Thompson Lee celebrated cel-ebrated her 90th birthday on December 21, 1998. An informal celebration in her honor will be held in her home on Saturday, December 26, from 2 to 5 p.m. All her dear friends are invited. Kathryn has written her life story, entitled Blindness in a Mormon Heritage: An Autobiography. Autobiog-raphy. Legally blind since she was a child, Kathryn took notes for the book using a slate and stylus to punch Braille onto special spe-cial paper. She then dictated her notes to a neighbor, Amy Golden, who transcribed them. The story was then transcribed onto discs by a friend, Preston Owens. Kathryn worked as a home teacher for the blind from 1934 until 1973. She would teach her clients how to map out their home, use the telephone, and cook on the stove. She would teach Braille and inform them of services available. She was invaluable in-valuable in helping them adjust to their blindness. "She was persistent with those who had lost their sight and retreated re-treated from the world," her daughter, Judie McDermott, stated. "She showed them how to make life full of independence and joy again. I saw her literally change lives and give all those she touched the tools they needed to live with their blindness and become self-sufficient." Kathryn met her first hus- ' band, Leonard Vernon Thomp- ' son, while visiting Brigham City, Utah, to teach one of Thompson's legally blind relatives. "When he saw her, he said, Tm going to marry that woman, McDermott, of Sunset, Utah, re called. They were married in Brigham City in 1935. During her time as a home teacher, Kathryn traveled to 15 counties throughout Utah. It wasn't unusual to put 1,200 miles on the odometer in a month. "From 1961 to 1973, Dad was her driver and helped her do the book work, until his death," McDermott explained. Kathryn married Melvin Lee of Fillmore, Utah, in 1976. From 1968 to 1972, Kathryn was president of the Utah State Association for the Blind. She started a newsletter, theBeehive Bulletin, designed the logo, and was writer and editor during those years. She was appointed to the Governor's Advisory Council for the School of the Deaf and Blind in 1975. Kathryn kept busy after af-ter retiring. From 1982 to 1985 she taught special education at Westridge School in Provo. She had one blind girl she worked with for an extended time. She helped the student make the adjustment ad-justment to her blindness. Kathryn also published a book about her brother, Cecil, who was an accomplished musician, playing play-ing the piano and organ. She published a book of poetry. After her husband Melvin died, Kathryn lived with Cecil in Orem until his death. Kathryn is a feisty woman, McDermott stated. She speaks well, she went to college, and she was instrumental in bringing about changes in Utah law improving im-proving the lives of the blind. She was an eloquent and persistent spokesman for the blind. In her book, Kathryn wrote, "Writing in Braille is the way I can think best. It's the same as picking up a pencil or pen. I punch away with the slate and stylus. That's understandable, since I've been doing it since I was seven." Kathryn Lee moved to Orem in 1960 and has lived there since that time, except for a few years when she lived in Fillmore, Utah, with her husband, Melvin Lee. Ibur.Heart Lft And Share : In The Joy if |
