The Bruins' win over Orem was preceded by a 14-2 defeat de-feat of Timpanogos in which Mountain View blasted out 17 hits. Breck Nelson was 3-3 on the afternoon with 4 RBIs, while AH Roberts added 2 triples. When the Bruins met Orem on Thursday, they needed another win in order to share a piece of the region title with Jordan. The Tigers needed the win in order to go in as a higher seed for the inter-region playoff. It was Mountain View, led by sophomore pitcher Shannon Lewis, that got both the win and the region championship. The win means that the Bruins get a bye in the first round of the state tournament tour-nament this afternoon. They will face the winner of the Copper Hills-Hunter bout tomorrow afternoon. af-ternoon. The Tigers face region one squad Weber this afternoon for their inter-region playoff game. Orem Coach Dave Gilchrist is sure of one thing about the games his team will play from here on out: they will not see any better pitching than what they have faced in region 4. That was especially true Thursday Thurs-day when Bruin Shannon Lewis pitched a two-hitter and struck out 5 Tigers. Lewis's efforts on the mound handcuffed the Tigers while the Bruin hitters picked up just enough for the win against another impressive pitcher Orem's own Trina Knapp. Knapp struck out 4 Bruin batters. Still, Lisa Osguthorpe's 2 RBI singles fueled MountainView's drive while Lewis knocked out a sacri fice fly to score Mountain View's other earned run. "We weren't getting real solid hits and when we did hit the ball it was right to them. But it seems like you always do that against great pitchers," Coach Dave Gilchrist said. Lewis knows a strong infield is key to her success on the mound. "I feel like I am pitching good, but the defense is really helping out," she said. The Tigers fell to Jordan by the same 4-0 margin on Tuesday. Ally Harding managed to put down Orem's only, hit: as the Beetdiggers, led by pitcher Amy Hendricks, picked up the win they needed to share the region title with Mountain View. Trina Knapp went the distance for Orem, pitching a solid game of 5 strikeouts and just one earned run. At 17-5 overall, the Bruins look like one of the team's to beat in the state tournament this coming week. "We're ready," Lewis said. "We've been hitting pretty good so I think that it will come down to defense," she added. The Tigers face Weber in Ogden this afternoon at 3:30 pm and the Bruins will play on Thursday at home. ! i.4 r .-turn r v- it If . v " Orem Freshman Trina Knapp pitched against the Bruins holidng Mountain View to one run in the first 5 innings.
