Brady Flygare Dilg By Gina Clark Sportswriter The Pleasant Grove Vikings did what no other region team had done when they defeated Spanish Fork 7-3 last Tuesday. Pleasant Grove scored often and early while pitcher Nick Huntsman Hunts-man controlled the Spanish Fork bats on the way to the win. The Dons attempted to stage a seventh-inning comeback when they blasted what would have been a 3-hitter for Huntsman. Down 7-0 in their final at-bat, Spanish Fork took advantage of .3 walks by following them with a string of hits that stole the Vikings' Vi-kings' shutout. Even though Huntsman didn't get the 3-hitter, "he was in command com-mand pretty much the whole game," Pleasant Grove Coach Jon Hoover said. Huntsman struck out 9 Spanish Fork batters in Tuesday's game. Pleasant Grove took quick offensive of-fensive control of the Dons' home field, scoring 4 runs in just 3 innings. in-nings. The Vikings exploded in the sixth inning when Jared Clements blasted a 2-run double. Josh Bolingbroke and Brian Robinson were also offensive standouts for Pleasant Grove. The 3-5 Vikings will wrap up region play this week when they meet Provo and Timpview. Hoover and his crew are hoping to "peak at the right time," he said. Orem The Tigers maintained their i undefeated region record last week with wins over Brighton and American Fork. Orem , blanked the Bengals, then faced one of their tightest battles yet at American Fork. Against Brighton, Jimmy England En-gland allowed just 7 hits and struck out 6 Bengal players, leading lead-ing the Tigers to the 6-0 win. England En-gland also wielded the biggest bat for Orem, blasting a home run against Brighton. On Friday, Orem defeated American Fork by a 9-7 margin. The Cavemen stormed the Tigers' home field, taking a first-inning lead of 2-0. The Tigers responded, scoring three runs in the second inning. But American Fork was relentless, picking up two runs in the fifth inning that gave them a 6-5 lead for 3 innings of play. The Tigers, lead by pitchers Josh Fitts and Taylor Pullins, scored 4 runs in their final at-bat to claim the win. Richard Jordan had 2 doubles and Wane Work-' Work-' man added a home run to the winning effort. Orem, who is yet to be defeated de-feated by any Utah team, is getting get-ting use to opponents primed to battle the state's number-one ranked team. They see the number num-ber one ranking and the come out gunning for us," said Tiger senior Taylor Pullins. The Tigers now take on Jordan Jor-dan and Alta in their final week slides back to first against Brighton. fe i A If1 V I... . , , - yr i in il-t.1i ,i, . ,,, . . , , . Timpanogos The Timpanogos Timber-wolves Timber-wolves were just three runs away from adding two wins to their record instead of two losses last week. Timp lost to Hillcrest 3-2 and then nearly topped Brighton. The Bengals went on to win the game 17-15. "I wish we'd pull them off," junior Timp pitcher Jim Huish said of his team's string of would-be would-be wins. Timp's Tuesday match-up with Hillcrest hinged on important impor-tant plays at the beginning and end of the game. In the first inning, in-ning, Huish had pitched 2 two outs. He pitched a strike out that should have been the third out, but a dropped ball but that Husky runner on first base. Hillcrest then rallied on 2 outs, scoring 2 runs in that first inning. Timpanogos remained scoreless score-less until the fifth inning. Down 3-1 in the seventh inning, Korey Olsen knocked a single into centerfield that scored a second Timberwolf run. Rounding third was Brady Flygare, who might have been Timp's tying run if it were not for an on-the-money shot from centerfield to home base that nulled Flygare's run and got the third out. Huish had 4 strikeouts and allowed just 5 hits. Timpanogos lost to Brighton 17-15 on Friday. The Bengals took advantage of Timp's errors in the field on their way to the win. Korey Olsen, Shawn Anderson, Ander-son, and Colby Dobson all had doubles whileAnderson and Dob-son Dob-son also added home runs. Timpanogos ends region play this week when they face American Ameri-can Fork and Jordan. "We've been in most of these last games, so I think we can pull off some of these final games," Huish added. MountainView The Bruins split their two D games last week, losing to Hillcrest 10-5 and then defeating Jordan 5-3. i In the early innings of Mountain Moun-tain View's match-up with Hillcrest, the Bruins looked like they were on their way to getting their first win over the Huskies this season. Mountain View led 5-4 after 2 innings of play. But then Hillcrest exploded, scoring 5 runs in the third inning. Unfortunately Un-fortunately for Mountain View, at that point "we just couldn't score anymore," Bruin senior Taylor Ehat commented. Ehat's home run was the biggest big-gest hit for the Bruins. Meanwhile, Mean-while, Hillcrest had a total of 15 hits nearly half of them for extra ex-tra bases. That made the difference differ-ence in the loss. Earlier in the week, the Bruins Bru-ins came out on top of an 11-in-ning marathon with Jordan. The win put Mountain View ahead of Jordan in the region standings and gives the Bruins some momentum mo-mentum going into this final week of region play. Against Jordan, the score stayed close until the top of the eleventh inning when Mountain View went ahead. Nate Sorenson knocked out 1 of his 2 doubles in that inning, then a Jeff Johnson single sent the winning run home. Nate Tregeagle and Adam Jensen also had big hits for Mountain View. Ehat and Johnson shared pitching duties. Mountain View finishes region re-gion play this week when they take on Alta and Brighton.
