OPEH THAm.rrBfflKE,lKW 3:OQ UNTIL 1 1 :OQ ' . The Skyline Eagles claimed their second consecutive state ; championship Friday when they t defeated the Orem Tigers 13-6. The Eagles battled back from a 6-0 first half deficit to dominate the second half and claim the win on a muddy Weber State University field. Orem's match-up with the Eagles was billed as another battle of 5A's top two football teams. But for the Tigers, finalists three of the past four years, Friday's game felt like an eery repeat of the 1993 championship match they lost to Skyline. In both games Orem took a narrow lead into the second half only to lose it after some of their own offensive near misses. On Friday, that near miss came in the fourth quarter, just after Skyline opened the second half "l" " Josh Lyman made good on the drive with a 12-yard run. That touchdown gave Skyline a one point lead over Orem, who had miscued on a two-point conversion attempt in the second quarter. Orem's Austin Berge then went to the air in an attempt to regain the Tiger lead. Deep in Orem's own territory, Berge connected with tight-end Jon Faldmo 70 yards down field. Faldmo dove to pull down the reception and put Orem on Skyline's 6 yard line. But a yellow yel-low flag signaling illegal motion on the Tigers nixed the big pass play. Two downs later the Tigers would punt the ball into the Eagles' hands. On the ensuing possession, Skyline staged a powerful 15-play, 51-yard drive that ended in Lyman's second touchdown this time Lyman dashed 8 yards into end zone for six points, But eyen mure uruising man inose sixpomis 'were the six minutes the Eagles ticked off the clock. With just 2:19 remaining, the Tigers' hands were tied. After a fumbled first down, the Tigers couldn't make good on a screen pass and another pass play that followed. Out of time and time outs, the Tigers conceded the win to the Eagles.. . ? Coach Paul Clark summed up the loss simply: v "We had chances...but we couldn't seem to get things going on our side.'' ' That was not the case in the first half. Orem's defense stymied the Eagles in the first half, stopping stop-ping them just shy of a touchdown in the first period. Jon Barlow also picked off what might have been an Eagle touchdown pass in the second period. The Tigers scored before the half when Jared Harper barreled one yard into the 'end zone. But in the second half Skyline "really controlled the line of scrimmage scrim-mage on both sides of the ball," Clark commented. The rain ended up being a factor fac-tor for two teams used to high-powered scoring attacks. "I really felt like the weather neutralized our advantages in speed and size," Clark added. Still, none of the Tigers are pinning pin-ning the 13-6 loss on weather or penalties. "I'm disappointed that . we didn't win the final game, but ; it won't take away from being there c in the first place," Clark concluded. Skyline out paced Orem with 223 yards rushing to the Tigers' 138 yards. Harper's 50 yards rushing rush-ing led the Tigers. Berge connected on 5 of 13 attempts for 75 yards. Orem finished with a 10-3 season record. yi . rr V. '- . - Austing Berge (12) surveys the off. 1 111 Y" r t f- F v,. V' $.
