Letter carriers food drive to benefit needy Most letter carriers from throughout the state will be collecting col-lecting food donations while making their appointed rounds on Sat., May 11. Utah letter carriers car-riers are hoping to fill local food bank shelves, which are traditionally tradi-tionally bare this time of year. Letter carriers are dedicating dedicat-ing the drive to the 100,000 children in the state exposed to hunger each day. Residents throughout Utah are being asked to participate by placing nonperishable food in a bag near their mailbox prior to mail delivery on Saturday, May 11. All food will be distributed to local food banks. Last year, Utah letter carriers car-riers collected nearly 500,000 pounds of food, enough to provide pro-vide approximately 170,000 meals for hungry Utah children and adults. The Letter Carriers Food Drive is the largest single-day single-day food drive in the nation.' I -Al. W can prevent , electrical accidents this summer by following these important safety tips: . Don't let ' children fly kites near power lines, or in rainy weather (never use any string containing metal or foil). . Teach children to stay out of electrical substations sub-stations and other areas marked "Danger: High Voltage." Exercise caution and use common sense around electricity, and teach your children to do the same. When it comes to kids and power lines, safety is no accident. ' Accompanist Irene planned to be a music major at BYU, and did serve as an accompanist with Crawford Gates. She has had years of experience as an accompanist in church, beginning begin-ning as a Sunday School organist or-ganist at age 13. She credits her mother's training with helping her achieve what she has musically. musi-cally. "An accompanist almost has to crawl inside somebody's head and know what they're going to do and when," Maurine said, in praising Irene. The two agreed that they have truly become a team -- almost one person in their musical collaboration. Their husbands, L. Kay Madsen of Orem, and F. Terry Jenkins of Pleasant Grove, have both been supportive throughout the years. For Maurine it is . stained glass work, gardening, working with the computer, and enjoying her family, many of , whom live close by. Irene is the ; mother of five and grandmother of 9. Maurine raised 8 children and has 30 grandchildren. A favorite song? Maurine's favorite is "Let There Be Peace On Earth", with has been adopted as the Chauntenettes theme song.
