Show OrerrvGeneva Times Student housing proposal A resolution to grant a conditional condi-tional use permit for the proposed 55-unit Greenbrier Apartments at 550 South 1200 West was tabled until November 28 at the Orem City Council meeting of November 14, in order to allow the project's consideration con-sideration by the full councfl. Two councilmembers, Tim Christensen and Chris Yandow, were excused from the November Novem-ber 14 meeting and did not attend. at-tend. Neighbors turned out to oppose op-pose the project, expressing concerns con-cerns with the possible generation genera-tion of extra traffic around Utah Valley State College and the general impact of the development develop-ment on the neighborhood. Applicant Jim Woomer said "every step", including holding a neighborhood meeting, had been taken to make the project pleasing pleas-ing to the neighborhood, but decreasing the number of units would have an adverse economic impact. Area resident Larry Anderson Ander-son said he had not known about the meeting, and charged that there would be parking problems at the complex, with the lots too far away from the , units. In answer to a question from Mayor Stella Welsh, city engineer en-gineer Bob Moore said a 35-foot height would be permitted in this area for a home. A 33-foot height was proposed for the Greenbrier buildings. t Councilman Kelvin Clayton said he liked the proximity of the site to the college, but other factors fac-tors about the project were not favorable for the neighbors. He noted, however, that the project did meet city codes. Woomer asked, "Are we ever going to put student housing nearUVSC?" City Attorney Paul Johnson said the council would have to find a land use reason in order to deny the project. Council-woman Council-woman Judy Bell asked if traffic could be considered a reason, and Johnson said it could be considered, con-sidered, but would have to be balanced with other factors. Councilman Steve Heinz said he felt there had not been significant efforts to "minimize adverse effects" on the neighborhood. neighbor-hood. "The neighbors can clearly see a negative impact," he said. Woomer reminded the council coun-cil that there had been a unanimous unani-mous vote to put in a student housing overlay zone in the area, and he said he had honest VHitoHThSMOOH MICROWAVE SERVICE SHAVERS GI SALES & 'I fes SERVICE V I CLOCK tftf ' REPAIR HI M rn VACUUM SALES & LA.'.'? Councilman Stephen Sandstrom said he did not see where residents were going to park at the complex, but on the other hand he was aware of construction con-struction costs, so he was struggling strug-gling with the issue. Clayton suggested withdrawing an earlier motion he had made to approve the project, and tabling considera mi - . w..W, l" iirergfe iiiH.fi II! 11 It's incredible. Heinz recommended that the developer talk to the neighbors, noting that if they were satisfied, satis-fied, he would be far more likely to approve the plan. Sandstrom said it would be naive of the council to think that the site would ever develop as single family homes. The motion to table the item passed.
