Show Hon News and information from local schools and colleges Page 7 Orem-Gcneva Times Wednesday, May 24, 1995 Orem's Shelley Andrew completes 13 years of perfect school attendance Shelley Andrew, daughter of Sherman and Susan Andrew of Orem, will be graduating from Orem High School this week with a record to envy 13 years of perfect attendance in Orem schools. Shelley said she was never "really, really sick" during that time, and small ailments like a headache were "never a big deal" to her. Tve always been pretty healthy," heal-thy," she said. "It's been really fun to watch Orem High take a lot of state games this year," Shelley said when asked what she will remember remem-ber about her years in school. She added that she has enjoyed being involved in school activities. Shelley began elementary school at Scera Park, and attended there through 5th grade. In 6th grade, she went to Cherry Hill. From there she went on to Lakeridge Junior High and Orem High School, where she is graduating graduat-ing with honors and a 3.995 GPA. She plans to continue her education at Brigham Young University, where she has received a full tuition scholarship. scholar-ship. She is prepared to study to become a registered nurse and hopes to get her master's degree and to be a nurse practitioner. At a recent Tiger Gold Awards Assembly, Shelley garnered a number of honors. She was given certificates for outstanding performance perfor-mance in A.P. English, A.P. U.S. History, an adult roles class, and interior design. ' Some of her favorite teachers MVHS raises money for the Oklahoma bombing victims Eflhey Gardea, a student at Mountain View High School in Orem, was in school when the bomb went off at the federal building in Oklahoma City. Her teacher turned on CNN so they could watch the tragedy. "It was horrible," she said, "to even think someone would bomb a building, especially during working work-ing hours. Later when I found out that there were children killed, it broke my heart." Eflhey has four brothers and sisters, and two of them are under age two. The bombing struck very close to home. She couldn't even imagine what it would be like if a member of her own family was killed. Everyone was talking about the bombing. People on television, in the hallways, at home, and even in the classroom. One student stood up and talked about the bombing and pleaded for our help. Eflhey decided to help raise money for the bombing victims. She talked to the principal and had it approved. A water company com-pany donated water bottles, students stu-dents made posters, Studentbody officers made announcements, and students and teachers donated money. Bottles were sent up all over the school. Also they sent up jars at the doors during the dance, and students donated their spare cash. A total of $330 was collected. The money was sent to the AGFE Relief Fund, care of United Bank. "I'm very proud of my school and the students that gave money," Effney said. "Please let us know if there is anything else we could do to help." Orem graduate named at Oklahoma City U. Oklahoma City University in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, conferred con-ferred undergraduate and graduate degrees on over 1,300 students May 6. Students can receive college credit for general education classes clas-ses offered on the weekend. John Macfarlane, coordinator of the UVSC Weekend College, said the number of non-traditional students stu-dents in the community wanting to attend college has prompted' UVSC to offer special classes to accommodate such students. "People looking to complete their general education requirements require-ments while working full-time can come for a few hours every Saturday and have those require-ments require-ments completed within approximately ap-proximately two years," said Macfarlane. "We have some of our best faculty members teaching ' Saturday classes so students can be sure they are getting the best possible education." Macfarlane also said the average class size is between 15-20 15-20 people, meaning students get the individual attention they might need. Saturday classes offered include in-clude classes in English, business, busi-ness, computer science, health and physical education, mathematics, mathe-matics, science, humanities, and philosophy. Mrs. Cohen has worked with students at all three grade levels while here at Orem Junior. She taught students in Colorado, Ohio, Texas and Oklahoma. Thirteen Thir-teen years ago, she came to Orem Jr. High School and brought her warm southern personality and charm into the classroom. Serious medical conditions required re-quired Mrs. Cohen to retire earlier ear-lier this year after 32 years as an educator, to allow her to pursue an aggressive treatment program for cancer. A successful chemotherapy chemo-therapy program will now allow Janey to keep busy working with her adopted adolescent grandson, Jimmy. She and her husband, Irving, Ir-ving, plan to enjoy their combined families of 13 children and their 19 grandchildren. Henshaw and Mis3 Robinson, teachers in her 6th grade "Ideas" accelerated learning class; Mr. Glassford for biology and Mrs. Heywood for English in junior high; and Kerry Downs for English and Bill Gillespie for U.S. history in high school. Traits that these teachers had in common,1 Shelley said, were that they were all interested in and respected the opinions of others. "It was evident they all worked extra hard and cared about the over-all educational educa-tional experience," she noted. Shelley has two older sisters, Suzette Hill and Stefnie Beck, and a younger brother, Shane, her hobbies and interests include skiing, vacationing, and participating par-ticipating in and watching all kinds of sports.
