View Bruins power over PI. Grove Vikings 21-7 By Cathe Owens Mountain View's defense powered a 21-7 win against Pleasant Grove Friday in the Bruin football Region IT opener. Tough defensive pressure keyed the win, keeping the visiting Vikings away from goal territory for most of the game. "The offense played really, well the second half," said Bruin Head Coach Steve Park, "but the defense was in there the whole game and shut them down." Both teams seemed to struggle strug-gle offensively in the first half, with each team's opening drive ending prematurely with interceptions. inter-ceptions. After Pleasant Grove ended the Bruin drive, the Mountain Moun-tain View defense responded in kind. Scott Burk dropped Montgomery for a 10-yard loss then Jim Marks came up with the interception that bounced out of the intended receiver's arms. The Vikings' only score came after they recovered a fumble on their own punt at the Bruin 28. A Glen Montgomery-to-John Tol-man Tol-man pass moved the ball to the three yard line, and Donnell Hooley took the ball in for the touchdown with 10:36 remaining in the first half. With second-and-one on the two, the Bruin defenders denied the Vikings the first down on three consecutive plays. On fourth-and-one, Mountain Moun-tain View's Mike Whimpey and John Barksdale broke through the line to throw Hooley for a three yard loss. "The biggest play of the game was when the defense shut them down at the goal line," Park said. That play kept the Viking lead down to seven points at the half, and it didn't take long to match it Two strong defensive plays put Pleasant Grove in a deep hole on their opening possession of the second half. Whimpey dropped Hooley for a loss on a pitch play, them Danny Davis sacked Montgomery for a third-and-19 spot on the Viking 26. The pass intended to move the Viking out of the hole was brought down by Mountain View's Robb Nelson, who ran it .back behind a host of blockers to the 18. Dan Bird took a handoff for a four yard gain, then Hawkins ran the remaining 14 to put Mountain View on the scoreboard. The Bruin defense stalled the next Viking drive and the Bruins took over, returning the punt to their own 43. Chris Henderson booted the second of three PATs for a 14-7 lead at the 1:49 mark in the third period. The ground game gave the Bruins three touchdowns, all in the second half, using a size advantage ad-vantage over the Vikings to benefit the Bruin offense. "We made some adjustments coming out of our wishbone, and those worked in the second half," Park said. The running backs did a great job and our fullback did a great job blocking - it was like having an extra lineman out there." The final Bruin touchdown put icing on the cake with 2:44 left in the game. Mountain View started the final scoring drive from the Viking 40, after Blayne Allsup got a hand on the Pleasant Grove punt and Royal Chamberlain Chamber-lain returned the shortened kick. From there Bird and Nelson again shared the weight of the offensive drive with four Nelson carries earning 22 yards and two Bird carries, one for 11 yards and the final 15-yard jaunt to paydirt Kenny Parcell ended the final Viking possession practically before it started, grabbing Montgomery's pass from the receiver juggling it.
