Show Orem-Geneva Times Wednesday, September 19, 1990 Page 5 Jennifer Umphress to marry James Ottens in SL Temple Jennifer Marguerite Umphress, Umph-ress, daughter of James Umphress Umph-ress and the late Linda Umphress of Texas, will marry James Paul Ottens, son of John and Joyce Ottens, Ot-tens, Orem, Utah on Thursday, Sept. 20, 1990 in the Salt Lake Temple. A reception will honor the couple that evening from six to nine at 400 East 800 South, Orem. The event is open to all friends and relatives. Bridal attendants are Carol Ottens, sister of the groom; Dawn Ottens, sister-in-law of the groom; Teresa Pina, friend of the bride; Susan and Alma Ottens, cousins of the groom. Groom's attendants are Chris and Carl Ottens, brothers of the groom; Tony Pina, friend of the groom; Paul Ottens, cousin of the groom. Special guests will be grandmothers, grand-mothers, Mrs, C. Thiel and Marian Goldhang. The bride-elect was graduated gradu-ated from high school in Texas. She attends Brigham Young University and is employed at Signetics in Orem. She served a mission for the LDS Church in -J ill ELIZABETH ANN JOHNSON T can overcome obstacles" Orem girl chosen runner-up in National Pageant ' A beautiful and talented Orem girl with a positive attitude was able to overcome some recent hand injuries to compete successfully success-fully as a pianist in a national scholarship pageant. Elizabeth Anne Johnson, daughter of Rand and Evelyn Johnson, was named first runner-up runner-up ' at the 1990 National Sweetheart Pageant held Aug. 27-Sept. 2 atHoopeston, Illinois. The pageant is sponsored by the Jaycees and is held annually in conjunction with the National Sweet Corn Festival. Twenty-three states sent their first runners-up the pageant this year. The contestants contest-ants were honored at numerous dinners and festival functions throughout the week including a parade held Saturday morning. In addition to rehearsals for the pageant production number, the contestants were kept busy during the week touring local factories fac-tories and businesses. OVERCAME INJURIES Elizabeth, in addition to a $1200 scholarship and many prizes from local merchants, also won a preliminary award in the evening gown competition. Her success in the pageant was particularly par-ticularly notable due to the fact that only two months ago she was involved in an auto-pedestrian accident and suffered a broken leg and severed nerve, artery and tendon in her left hand which left her without feeling in some of her fingers. Elizabeth is a pianist and for her talent number she played Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2". When asked about her success in view of her injuries, Elizabeth said, "It has taught me that by being flexible and exercising a possitive attitude, I can overcome obstacles in my life." Choral composition competition announced The Utah Valley Choral Society announces its first annual an-nual Choral Composition Competition. Com-petition. The sixty-voice mixed choir offers this competition as part of its strong commitment to excellent choral music and to encourage en-courage composers of music in this unique form. This blind competition is open to any interested composer, regardless of professional status, residence, age, or academic ..qualificatipns. The musical field is wide open. UVCS will consider all types of music from sacred, to light nonsense, non-sense, to patriotic, to settings of non-English texts. All kinds of accompaniment ac-companiment are acceptable. Winners will receive cash prizes. First Prize: $100; Second Prize: $75; Third Prize: $25. All winning compositions will be performed per-formed by the Utah Valley Choral Society at a special concert in the Provo Tabernacle in spring of 1991.
