Safety closures save 340 children's lives Tm fUll Zl BUSHNELL-COURTESY ml ASK FOR JOHN McGINN 224- 1234 225- 7608 EASTVIEW C0ND0S New Construction ; 170 East 200 North . : Orem Next time you complain about the difficulty of opening a bottle of medicine, think about this: Child-resistant packaging of oral prescription medicines has saved the lives of an estimated 340 children in the last 16 years, according to officials at Orem Community Hospital. OCH is a member of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) National Electronic Injury In-jury Surveillance System. The CPSC analyzed child fatality data for accidental ingestions inges-tions of oral prescriptions medicines from 1964 to 1986 and found a statistically significant decline in the child fatality rate after 1974, the year in which child-resistant packaging was required re-quired for oral prescription medicines. CPSC chairman Jacqueline Jones-Smith slated, "All adults, including grandparents, should use child-resistant closures to help prevent poisonings to children, and remember to keep all poisonous products out of reach from children." Despite the reduction in the death rate, many children are poisoned or have "near-misses" with medicines and household chemicals each year. In 1987, the most recent year for which complete com-plete data is available, there were 31 deaths to children under the age of five who accidentally swallowed swal-lowed medicines and household chemicals. Children are drawn to products that are bright and colorful, such as anti-freeze, turpentine, furniture furni-ture polish, and other household products. If children ingest these poisonous products, immediate medical attention should be : sought Call the Utah Poison Control Con-trol Center at 1-800-456-7707, or bring the chid to the nearest emergency emer-gency room and take the product that the child swallowed to show the doctor, so exact treatment can be administered. During 1987, approximately 10,000 children received hospital emergency room treatment for accidental poisonings, and poison control centers received more than half a million calls about children exposed to medicines and household chemicals.
