Show Orem-Geneva Times Wednesday, June 14, 1989 Page 3 Poets win $14,000 Orem's Kate Clark Spencer has been awarded a first prize in the Personal Essay category of the 31st annual Utah Original Writing Competition of the Utah Arts Council. Her essay, "I Have Never Heard Him Sing," was awarded first prize by Judge Nancy Mairs, who had high praise for Spencer's unsentimental story about schizophrenia. Spencer was honored by Lt. Gov. Val Oveson in a June 1 awards celebration at the Governor's Residence, at which Paragonah poet David Lee was awarded the $5,000 Publication Prize for his book-length collection collec-tion of poems, Day's Work. The awards ceremony featured a reading by acclaimed Utah novelist and former Publication Prize winner Barbara Williams. The $5,000 cash prize must be used for the sole purpose of making suitable arrangement with a reputable publisher for the publication of the work to which the prize was awarded. In all, 28 writers, selected from among some 400 entrants, received awards totaling more than $14,000 at the June 1 awards ceremony. Winners represented rep-resented many regions of the state, including Santa Clara, Logan, Price, Provo, Moab and the greater Salt Lake area. The 5 is Silent; Serious Poetry, Michael D. White, Salt Lake City, untitled; and Short Story, Margaret Young, Provo, "Elegy for John Donnefor the Bearded Guy." As in past years, local writers of national reputation joined with distinguished writers from Senior Center offers activities A special Father's Day program pro-gram is planned at the Orem Senior Friendship Center. The Utah Valley Good Time Singers will entertain the Seniors Friday, June 16, at 12:15. This versatile and talented group entertains throughout the state. Ray Parkinson from the Social So-cial Security Office will speak at the Orem Center on Thursday, June 15, during the noon hour. He will answer any questions interested in-terested Seniors may have concerning con-cerning changes in Social Security. Under the TEMPORARY FOOD ASSISTANCE PROGRAM PRO-GRAM (TEFAP) food items (minus cheese) will be distributed , at Orem Senior Friendship Center Cen-ter Tuesday, june 27, to all eligible Seniors who reside in Orem. The Center is located at 93 North 400 East, Orem. The doors open promptly at 8:30 a.m. and close at 3 p.m. Those people picking pick-ing up food for others are required to have a letter of permission stating stat-ing the person is unable to pick up the food for themselves, their name, address, phone number, household size and signature. The Senior Health Promotion, Clinic will be closed Tuesday, June 20 and Tuesday, June 27.. Blood pressure checks will still be available on those days. No appointment ap-pointment necessary. A turn-around trip is scheduled Wednesday, July 12, to Wendover. The bus departs from the Friendship Center promptly at 8 a.m. Future tours include the RenoTahoe Tour July 31-?August 31-?August 3. With the exception of the narrator's blaming her clinical depression on her relationship with Ray, the presentation of mental illness strikes few false notes," Mairs wrote. The Publication Prize, in-i in-i itiated in 1979, is awarded to the best book-length manuscript from the previous year's competition, competi-tion, said G. Barnes, Utah Council Coun-cil Literary Arts Coordinator. "It is designed to assure that some work possessing genuine significance sig-nificance for the state of Utah will not be lost from the body of published pub-lished literature." Twenty members off the Future Homemakers of America throughout the United States were chosen to spend eight weeks in Japan living with Japanese families. Future Homemakers of America and Youth For Understanding Under-standing sponsor this partnership partner-ship program because they share compatible goals. Both organizations organiza-tions encourage individual and group involvement in helping achieve worldwide brotherhood. Funded by the Kikkoman Corporation Cor-poration of Japan, this program began in 1979. To date, 177 Future Fu-ture Homemakers of America members have received scholarships scholar-ships valued over $3,000 each. This year, 120 FHAHERO members applied for the scholarship. scholar-ship. The process involved an application, ap-plication, recommendations, screening and an interview. Julie and the other winners will attend a three-day orientation orienta-tion session at the University of Washington at Seattle in mid-June mid-June and fly directly to Japan at its conclusion. Julie will be met at the airport by her host family. "I'm looking forward to this experience.. It is going to be the greatest experience of my life! I'm excited to be able to have hands . on experiences in a foreign culture," cul-ture," says Julie. Julie is Orem High's FHA vice president. She is also a member of Orem High's Dance Company and Orem High's one Sophomore to received the Hugh 0Brian Award where she has the chance to meet with all the outstanding Sophomore's in the state. Along with FHA, Julie is actively involved in 4-H, Kyi JULIE FALDMO being the County Teen Council President. Julie sis the daughter of Norman Nor-man and Carolyn Faldmo of Orem. He chapter advisor is Jane Laird. Future Homemakers of America is a national vocational student organization of 285,000 home economic students through grade 12. Program emphasis is on leadership development, peer education, family communication and community service. It is unique uni-que among youth organizations because programs are planned and run by its student members.
