Show Orem-Geneva Times" -June 5, 1980 Orem Residents Honored By Hinckley Alumni by Ruth Peterson Parlell Peterson and Warren Stratton who helped win the Utah State High School championship champion-ship for Hinckley High School back in 1930 returned retur-ned to Millard County May 10 for the Golden anniversary commemorating com-memorating the event. The occasion was the Millard Academy-Hinckley Academy-Hinckley High School alumni banquet attended by 300 graduates from "far and wide" that was held in the Hinckley Ward Cultural Hall. Coached by the late Vernon Love, Hinckley, a Cinderella team, won the 1930 state hoop title in the Deseret Gym in Salt Lake City, by defeating Spring-ville, Spring-ville, Murray, Granite and American Fork, consecutively. con-secutively. At that time all high schools in the state competed against one another. Present to receive distinguished service awards were the following players of the team: Parlell Peterson, and Warren Stratton, Orem; Melvin Hawley, Delta; Ferron Blake, Shelley, Idaho; Reed Curtis, Yerington, Nevada; Rulon Davis, Idaho; and Homer Peterson, Peter-son, Hinckley, athletic manager; Glade Wright, Indio, Calif, was unable to attend. Honored posthumously posthum-ously were Coach Love, team captain Wayne Slaughter, Fred Reeve and. Paul Pratt. Family members were present to represent each one. LaVerl Christensen, Provo, chairman of the awards part of the program introduced the players and Parlell Peterson all-state guard on the championship team gave a tribute to Coach Love. An award was given to his wife, Bertha Love Barton. Also attending the reunion re-union were graduates, Paul and Dorothy Theobald, Orem. Leslie VliW'm' i mm : f 1 J Wright, Provo, former teacher at Lincoln High School, not only a graduate of Hinckley High but served as a principal there, was also in attendance. Two Groups Get Licenses Afler much discussion the Orem City Council approved the beer andor caberet licenses for Orem businesses in two groups. In this normal, yearly process, the licenses for the first group of businesses are generally renewed without complication. com-plication. These businesses are the ones which are checked out by the Orem Police Department and are found in compliance with all rules necessary for license reenewal. The second group of businesses, whose licenses were renewed conditionally, con-ditionally, were for great concern to the Council. The City Code requires all businesses selling beer or permitting consumption of alcohol on their property to submit an application, ap-plication, pay an application fee, and submit proof of a $2,000 bond. The Police Department is then required to investigate in-vestigate each location and make a recommendation regarding license renewal. As part of its investigation work, thj Police Department sent an undercover minor to each establishment. The police department reported, "In twelve of the locations, improper sale of liquor to a minor occurred and legal action is now pending." The council was informed that where legal action is now pending, license renewal should occur. They strongly agreed that if convictions result, show cause hearings should be immediately set to consider license suspension or revocation, and bond and fee forfeiture. Hearing Set On City Budget In a public meeting scheduled for June 17, at 7:30 p.m. the Orem City Council will be discussing the proposed budget for the coming fiscal year. Interested citizens are urged to attend at-tend the public meeting to see how the City intends to spend the $ 18,142,870 and to make their feelings known to members 'of the City Council and others who will be responsible for allocating City monies. 1 2 Bedroom - Unfurnished 225-3710 - 1700 So. 750 East Orem, Utah "Smile Every Mile" with OF OREM, 1128 SO.
