Show Orem ECiwonis Hear About China Trip At the noon luncheon of the Orem Kiwanis Club Monday, Dr. Earl L. Grossen, Secondary Education, Edu-cation, Dept., BYU, gave an impromptu report of his four week stay in the People's Republic of China recently. He stated that he was one of 20 educators edu-cators representing elementary ele-mentary and secondary schools who toured seven cities in China to study their school system and economic structure. He was delighted with the trip and with the excellent treatment there. The educators visiting China witnessed a social dance in which young and old were involved in dances that were somewhat some-what like ours before the advent of rock and roll. The couples there are very moral and marriage rarely occurs before age 25. Small families are highly encouraged to cut down the population growth. The streets are absolutely safe, even things lost or forgotten are returned or found hours or days later. Honesty Hon-esty is a virtue that is taught in every school and is strictly enforced, as is modesty in dress behavior. Spare-time activities ac-tivities of the people, young and old alike, involve in-volve mostly sports and shadow-boxing for physical physi-cal fitness. Even at 5 a.m. one can see many people outside doingpersonal isometric is-ometric calesthenics to keep in shape. Most of the churches were boarded up. Missionary Mis-sionary work is highly discouraged as is religion reli-gion through the teachings and through grading down in pay and work assignments assign-ments for those who are affiliated with them in any way. Most of the people have no outside literature such as newspapers, or magazines to read and no bibles. As a service to foreign diplomats, some Catholic and Protestant Pro-testant services are held in one city. Dr. Grossen was interested inter-ested to find that there are no crises as in America, Amer-ica, no oil problems be cause none is imported. However, there is a noticeable lack of modernization moder-nization and a great overpopulation. over-population. In the classrooms, they' found no discipline problems. prob-lems. High moral standards stan-dards are taught in the schools thr ough plays and pantomimes, as is honesty and other virtues. The government has a campaign cam-paign to cut out smoking among the older people, but the younger ones do not smoke. Dr. Grossen found conditions con-ditions in China much improved im-proved over conditions he observed in a recent trip to Russia. William D.
