It was while learning the rudiments of the saxophone that he began examining the art and craft of the popular music of the time. Soon, he was doing arrangements arran-gements for his own high school band; and not content con-tent with arranging the music of others, started putting together his own melodies and adding lyrics as well. Next he went to Juilliard, where he acquired the necessary background in theory and harmony. George began doing arrangements ar-rangements for Johnny Richards Ri-chards and Stan Kenton, but it was with his hit 'Oh What It Seemed To Be" that his songwriting career was launched. Within a year he was established as one of the top ballad writers in the country. In the mid '50s, however, changes began to appear on the musical horizon hor-izon in the form of 'The Beat' and George, never one to miss a beat changed right along with them. Having written 'Wheel of Fortune' first as a romantic roman-tic ballad (which went nowhere) no-where) he redid it in a rocked-up version and it rocketed to the top of the charts. As the '50s melted into the '60s, George kept racking rack-ing up winners: among others, 'Can't Help Falling In Love' and 'Lion Sleeps Tonight'; then '70s sounds such as his songs for The Stylistics. In addition, he found time to contribute to both Broadway and Hollywood. v hi lhiii-iifiM -mfcr -nf-""' ' 'li ' ifcwnwiit irm mimiMr- '-"-tfi -"Hrri TV COMPULOG SERVICES.
