It is estimated that one in every six ameri-cans ameri-cans have high blood pressure; that represents 35 million americans. Many factors influence high blood 'pressure. Your diet, your weight, or smoking. If you have high blood pressure, or hypertension, you should follow your doctor's in-i structions exactly. He may prescribe a special diet, an exercise program or medication for you. it is important that you take your medication as prescribed. Detection of high blood pressure is painless pain-less and easy, and the only way to determine if someone has high blood pressure is to measure it. As a part of high pressure month, the Utah County Health Depart -ment is sponsoring Blood Pressure Clinics for adults ages 20 to 65. The clinic for this area will be held May 24th from 2:00 - 4:30 at the Orem Post Office. Senior citizens citi-zens are encouraged to attend their regular blood pressure clinic, as usual. "My first desire for knowledge and my earliest passion for reading were awakened by my mother." Charles Dickens "All that is good in my life has come from my mother." Dwight L. Moody Letter To The Editor For the past few days the drummers and flimflam flim-flam artists of city hall have been portraying their skills of illusion. We have a $4 million dollar bond election scheduled which will cost the average tax-paying tax-paying family about $400. Yet in the city "HAPPENINGS" "HAPPEN-INGS" the cost is portrayed por-trayed as only $4.00 per month with no mention of a payment duration of en years. Most people have payed for their own road curb, and gutter improvements improve-ments as part of their home acquisition and incidental in-cidental land development costs. However, the city is now proposing that we subsidize developers and the owners of undeveloped property. Incidental to this, the tax nick, for most of us who have already paid for our own improve ments, will be higher than that of those who stand to benefit. Positive evidence that the tax is meant to benefit special interest groups may be found in the May 1979 city published "HAPPENINGS." "HAP-PENINGS." Page 4 shows a picture of a badly damaged dam-aged road which eats a $4.00 hubcap each month,' (if the papers inferences are accepted). This photograph photo-graph of a road to be renewed re-newed is identical with a photograph on the front page of the "OREM GENEVA TIMES," April 26th edition. Wherein it is stated, "Shown are the problems that Orem residents resi-dents in the Executive Estates area are being faced with. This North East Orem street will hopefully be improved." The March let ". . . TIMES" quotes City manager Albert E. Haines: ". . .the city holds a bond and intends to complete improvements (correction)" (correc-tion)" However, the ar- Orem-Geneva Times- -May 17, 1979 tical goes on to say that , , only $10,000 of the bond Letter 10 is available to perform the much more expensive THB LQIlOr work. THESE POORLY CONSTRUCTED NEW STREETS SHOULD BE REPLACED BY THEIR BUILDER, NOT BY THE TAXPAYERS. With this area slated to receive "Pork Barrel" assistance, it would be well to republish the names of the Executive Estates developers and contractors I understand there is a leash law in Orem. Dog are nottobe off their owner's own-er's property without a leash. Then why is this law not enforced? I have personaly been involved in several unfortunate incidents in-cidents that have occurred oc-curred because this law isn't enforced. 1. Forum Spokesman Bill Even-son Even-son expressed surprise ovor Gam's hirrt and angry response to no! being consulted by the Tribune concerning their endorsement of the SALT Tru y. fiveasoa. aBYU Physics Professor s.iid, "The Strategic Arms Limitation tabes is one of the vital poli-tinl poli-tinl issues ofoardiy and demands intelligent rational ra-tional discussion. Senator Sen-ator Gam's invective does nit contribute to an understanding of the complexities com-plexities of this most important im-portant issue." Forum Spokesman went on to criticize Senator Sena-tor Garn for his attack on the Salt Lake Tribune. Evenson characterized Garn's statement attacking attack-ing theTribune as 'arrogant 'arro-gant and the height of irresponsibility ir-responsibility on Garn's part. How could Garn knowingly accuse the editorial ed-itorial writers of not knowing the data he had available when in fact he did not know whatdatathe Tribune had available. It's the pot calling the kettle black Evenson also took issue is-sue withGarnfor labeling the President 'gutless and of telling "half-truths." "half-truths." Evenson said "Senator Garn's shabby behavior towards the President of the United States is shameful. The Senator lacks the ability to distinquish the difference differ-ence between political issues and personalities." Evenson said, "I think the people of Utah deserve a better national image than Senator Garn is giving giv-ing us. I think he owes Utahns an apology for his ill tempered behavior towards those with whom he disagrees." Evenson said, "Senator "Sena-tor Garn reminds me of something Elder Gordon B.Hinckley said at BYU a few years ago. He said, one night. Muffin was a mixture of Pekingese -Poodle and very small. I had had him since I was four. This was a great loss to me. 2. We got another dog which was also Pekingese Pekin-gese - Poodle. Withinsix months he was alsokilled by a larger dog in our own backyard, while we were at church. 3. My next dog got her pelvis broken by a larger dog in our backyard. We train our dogs to stay home why don't others do the same? or why don't they put up a fence if they can't keep them home? 4. This year a dog came over to our school and one of my school -mates was bitten. For-tunatly For-tunatly for the little boy the dog was found. These are only incidents inci-dents that I have been involved in. I'm sure there are hundreds of others. Shouldn't something some-thing be done about enforcing en-forcing the leash law? Tatia Ferguson Age 11 by Ruth Louise Partridge My brother De is a man of distinction and has always driven that kind of car. Then came the crunch of motor fuel. There was no problem convincing my brother that there was a shortage of gas. A good many people argued that there was't a shortage, but not my brother De. The last time De and his wife Nell came to visit me, they were not driving the handsome car I was used to seeing. That funny looking bright yellow vehicle ve-hicle reminded me of a praying mantis. Praying mantises are interesting, but they are not elegant. There is no padding in this car; it is just a shell. But it only takes half as much gas to run it. Seeing my look of astonishment, as-tonishment, De explained the situation thus. "I can't go around agitating for a drop in gas consumption without doing something about it myself. And that's what we did. We do more walking, too. We have saved a considerable consider-able amount of gas in the short time we have driven this car." Selah and I'm proud of my brother and his wife. We are in an age of pickle suckers! We need con -structive contributions to our national problems, not just criticism.'" Evenson said, "Senator Garn's attack on the President Pre-sident and the Salt Lake Tribune is nothing more than the public , pickle sucking."
