The couple will be married on June 7th and an open house will be held that evening in the Sharon Stake Center, 545 South 800 East, Orem, where all friends and relatives are invited to attend. Pyne) 1947 CENTENNIAL OF UTAH COAL Before months had passed in Salt Lake Valley, the pioneers of 1847 where repeating the slogan: "We must find coal!' The first discovery of coal was in San Pete Valley in 1849, where smelting furnaces were later operated. A huge pile of sage brush was kept on hand to keep the fires from going out and damaging the furnace linings. The earliest discovery had resulted from Brigham Young's offer of rewards. The San Pete mines were early abandoned, however, because the coal was not of good coking quality. In 1854 the territorial legislature offered $1000 for discovery of coal within 40 miles of Salt Lake. Ten years later Chalk Creek coal was discovered and sold for $40 per ton. Legend says that the first coal was discovered in Utah by a hunter who was chasing a deer and stumbled over an outcrop-Ping. outcrop-Ping. In early developments, wagons wa-gons drove straight into the tunnel, were loaded by hand and driven away. The first coal mined in Pleasant Pleas-ant Valley - 1878 - was brought down the hillsde on pack mules. He will graduate on June 1st from Southern Colorado State with a major in psychology. Storyfime Saturday The storyteller at the Orem City Library this Saturday will be Loreen Martinez. Storytime will be held from 11:15 a.m. until noon. A filmstrip about Smokey the Bear and Marcy will be shown and the following follow-ing stories will be used: "Thid-wick "Thid-wick the Big Hearted Moose, "Mary Poppins, "It's Time Now", and "The Baby Animal Book". Children four years and older are welcome to come. Spring Festival Presented By Training School "Wide World of Sports," was the theme of theTrainingSchool festival held May 25 and 26. More than 300 students from Utah State Training School presented pre-sented this annual Spring Festival. Festi-val. Couple Takes Vows Saturday, May 25 Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hol-loman Hol-loman of Orem announce the marriage of their daughter, Lesley, to David Steiner on Saturday, May 25. David is the son of Betty Steiner of Kent, Washington, and Donald Steiner ofOgden. Claudia Laycock was the maid of honor and Brent Smith fulfilled ful-filled the duties of best man. The ceremony was performed at the Mountain Meadow Ranch Resort in Parley's Canyon by the. groom's father who is the minister of the First Presbyterian Pres-byterian Church in Ogden. A reception was held following the wedding. Lesley is a graduate of Orem High School where she was active in the National Honor Society, band, and Girl Scouts. She will graduate from the University Uni-versity of Utah next spring. David is a graduate of Ogden High School and has attended the University of Utah. He is presently a me mber of the Coast Guard Reserve and is Assistant Manager of the Value Village Thrift Store which benefits retarded re-tarded children in Salt Lake City. Swihart of Phoenix, grandparents grand-parents of the bride, Andy Hol-loman, Hol-loman, brother of the bride, on leave from the USMC, and Elizabeth Eli-zabeth Bingley of Tustin. California. The couple will graduate with honors this month from College of Eastern Utah where they have been active in student activities. In order to be included on the honor roll, a graduate student stu-dent must be enrolled full time and have a grade point average aver-age of 3.75 or better (4.0 is straight A). Students from our area to achieve honor roll include: Merrill L. Barfield, Psychology; Psycho-logy; Robert B. Jenkins, Secondary Se-condary Education; and Wayne Eillott Larson, Health, Physical Physi-cal Education and Recreation. Miss Petersen has served as Captain of the Blue Debutantes and as Homecoming Chairman and affiliated with LambdaDelta Sigma Sorority and the Home Economics Club. Both have been active in music and are listed in Who's Who Among American Junior Colleges. Mr. Donaldson has served anL.D.S. mission in South Africa. They will greet friends at a reception on the evening of their wedding at the Orem 19th Ward Cultural Hall and will be feted at an open house on Saturday, Sat-urday, June 22, at the L.D.S. Institute of Religion in Price. After their marriage the couple will make their home in Price until fall when they plan to continue their education at Brigham Young University. Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Lemmon Lem-mon of Mackay, Idaho announce the engagement and forthcoming forthcom-ing marriage of their daughter Carla to John W. Blair, son of Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Blair of Lake View and Mrs. Ruth B. Blair of Orem, Utah. The couple wiU be married June 8 in the Provo LDS Temple. Tem-ple. They will be honored at a wedding dinner to be attended by members of the immediate family. She graduated with honors from a business school in Boise and has been employed as a Secretary at the University Univer-sity of Wyoming at Laramie. Mr. Blair graduated from Orem High School in 1971 where he was active in the ROTC. He was a 4 year Seminary Graduate. Gradu-ate. He has been in the U.S. Air Force for 3 12 years, the past year being stationed at Fort Yukon, Alaska.
