Thursday, October 151970 Utah Stars Shoot For Championship A league championship in th first year of operation by a major league professional team? While this goal may seem next 'to impossible, It is exactly what the Utah Stars, one of the new clubs in the American Basketball Basket-ball Association, will be shooting shoot-ing for during the upcoming 1970-71 1970-71 season. There is sound basis for optimism. op-timism. First of all, this is not an expansion club. It is one coached by former Boston Celtic great Bill Sharman who paced the club to 17 wins in 21 starts at the tag-end of the 1969-70 campaign. Hopelessly out of any playoff consideration on March 5 when cable television entrepreneur Bill Daniels bought the club, the Stars came to life. Under Shar-man's Shar-man's brilliant guidance, they barely made the playoffs and then went on to defeat Dallas and the thought-to-be invincible Denver Rockets to capture the ABA Western West-ern Division championship. The Stars lost a hard-fought title series to the Indiana Facers four games to two. After the opener last night, the Stars will have an entire week off to prepare for a Wednesday, Oct. 21, encounter with the Pittsburgh Pitts-burgh Condors in the Salt Pal-.ace. Pal-.ace. That game will be played 'as a benefit sponsored by the Utah State Employees Association, Associa-tion, with proceeds going to the Utah State Training School at American Fork. The Stars play three more at home in a season-opening, five game stand on Saturday, Oct. 24, against the defending league champion Indiana Pacers; on Thursday, Oct. 29, against tin Rick Barry-led New York Nets; and on Saturday, Oct. 31, against Denver again. CLINIC TONIGHT The Utah Stars this week will be almost as busy off the playing play-ing court as on it. The club will stage a clinic at the Deseret Gymnasium tonight, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m. for all participants in the MIA basketball program of the LDS Church. The Stars also will be on hand at the Teen Fair at the Valley Fair Mall In Granger from Oct. 15 through 25. PTA Membership Aids Your Child I Most Americans agree that 'it's time to do something about what's happening in our nation today about student unrest increasing teenage drug abuse pollution and children In trouble. The PTA Is doing something about these and other problems which directly affect the welfare of youth. PTA stands for responsible citizens who choose to Invest time, energy, and effort in securing secur-ing the future of our country and our world for children are the future. "Value our Children's Future -Invest in PTA is the slogan for membership enrollment week October 12 through 17. Mrs. R. Eugene Elwood, Utah Congress State membership director, encourages en-courages all citizens of Utah to Join this worthwhile association associa-tion and share in the investment of our most priceless possession and most valuable resource our children by becoming an active PTA member. She said that 'Through membership in PTA we are afforded constructive con-structive opportunities which provide more meaningful lives for our children through projects and programs Wfe hare the new kind of Armstrong floor that hates waxing as much as you da It's called Solarianl' The sunny floor that shines without wax.
