Show Literary Club Opens Season Orem Literary Club held their first meeting of the season Thursday at the Orem Reception Centre. The club president, Mrs. Sherman (Veda) Howard, presided. pre-sided. Mrs.Verd(Ella)Washburn was hostess. A special guest, Mrs. Heston Wilberg, was introduced to the members by the hostess. Mrs. Wilberg gave a reading entitled "Golden Moments" and also related re-lated a story written by Mirla Greenwood Thayne, "But Covet Earnestly The program was followed by community singing which went along with the story. Twelve members and two guests were present. It was announced an-nounced that Mrs. Harold Calder will be the November hostess. Terry Jarvis Is Promoted U.S. ARM)', VIETNAM -Terry R. Jarvis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Keith E. Boren, 816 W. Fifth St. N., Orem, Utah, recently was prmoted to Army Specialist Four while serving with the 26th Engineer Battalion, Americal Division in Vietnam. Spec. 4 Jarvis is a tank driver driv-er in the battalion. He entered the Army in August 1969 and completed basic training at Ft. Lewis, Wash. A 1967-graduate of Orem High School, the 20-year-old soldier also attended the Utah Trade School in Provo. Dance Classes Are Scheduled Join the 'fun people' and learn to dance! The latest couple dances, mixers, and square dances will be taught by Earl A. and Ilene Beck, under the sponsorship spon-sorship of Alpine District Adult Education. Earl is a professional dance instructor and has taught dancing for the past 20 years. He is also dance Instructor at Brigham Young University. Classes for beginners will be held each Thursday, starting Oct. 15 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. for beginners be-ginners and from 9 to 11 p.m. for experienced dancers at the Westmore School, 1150 S. Richard Richards Named To Coal Advisory Committee Utahn Richard Richards has been named to the General Technical Advisory Committee for the Department of the Interior's Office of Coal Research Re-search by the Secretary of the Interior Walter J. Hickel. Richards, the Republican candidate for Congree in Utah's First District, caught the eye of National leadership such as Secretary Sec-retary Hickel while serving as Administrative Assistant to Congressman Con-gressman Laurence J. Burton and as Political Director of the Republican Re-publican National Committee. The coal advisory committee exercises consultative functions in connection with administration of the Coal Research Act as well as assisting in overall evaluation evalua-tion of the program and various research projects. In making the appointment, Secretary Hickel told Richards "your knowledge of the coal industry in-dustry and its problems, and your active efforts to encourage and stimulate production and conservation con-servation of coal in the United States will enable you to make a valuable contribution to the work of this commitee. This program enables the graduate student to obtain a commission com-mission in the Marine Corps by attending one 10-week training, the student is commissioned a second lieutenant in. the United States Marine Corps and returned to inactive duty on campus to complete his graduate work. The time spent in school after commissioning before beginning active duty is part of the students stu-dents total contractual obligation obliga-tion and is also considered as part of his first promotionperiod. To be eligible for the program, the student must have at least one available summer remaining prior to completion of his graduate work. Senator Dean has introduced 3 Resolutions to government officials calling for the elimination of unfair trade practices afforded Japanese Steel. Orem Campus Of Utah Technical College Senator Dean has asked Governor Rampton, and the Legislative Council's Education Committee to approve a new buildingprogram for the new OREM campus to be funded by the 1971 Legislature. Multiple Use Of Our Canyons Senator Dean has been asked by management of the Uinta National Forest to aid them in establishing several uses of the canyons and forest land adjacent to the northern Utah County Cities including Orem. Telephone Toll Free Service Senator Dean initiated a move to unite Utah County to petition the Telephone Company and the Public Service Commission to make all of Utah County a toll-free county. OREM City Council and OREM Chamber of Commerce have agreed to be a party to the petition. The petition will be for county wide toll-free calling at no increased cost to the Orem Subscriber. Also to be included in the petition will be a request to eliminate (immediately) longdistance call charges betweenOrem-Lindon-Vineyard and Pleasant Grove. His debates on the senate floor have really boosted Orem's Fruit and Vegetable industry. Solving Juvenile Delinquency Senator Dean has been appointed as Utah County's lone representative to the State Advisory Committee to the Juvenile Court system. As chairman of their Legislative Committee, legislation is being prepared on drug control, court procedure, criminal code and integrating the Juvenile Court system into the district court system as a family court. Senator Ernest H, Dean Democrat DYU and Ilace Relations Senator Dean has used his position of State Senator to challenge the right of public officials of State Universities to boycott any educational institution including B.Y.U. Typical of this effort was to challenge thru the Leadership of the California Legislature the right of the Coach of San Jose State to boycott B.Y.U. Senator Dean aids B.Y.U. as Regional Chairman of their Annual Fund Drive. Rehabilitation Of Handicapped Senator Dean is the chairman of the State Advisory Committee for handicapped children and Is actively pursuing programs to rehabilitate the Retarded - Emotionally Disturbed - Drug Addict - Deaf - Blind and the Physically Handicapped. One example of his efforts in this field has been to bring together the University Medical SchooLtb State Department of Health and The State Training School in American Fork to find causes and ways of eliminating mental retardation. Water Development Senator Dean was selected by the initiaters of the Central Utah Water Conservency District (while he was Speaker of Utah's House of Representatives) Rep-resentatives) to shephard the bill thru the Legislature. Now Orem has the district office. Senator Dean is presently chairman of a National Committee of Legislators Leg-islators serving the 50 state Legislatures on Water Development plus the development and conservation of our Natural Resources and Environmental control. He has written the policy position of the National Legislative Conference on water development and proper utilization of our Natural Resources. Socio-Economic Deprived People Senator Dean has been given the responsibility of developing a program wherein Utah Technical College in concert with State and Federal Agencies in Central Utah can prepare and train deprived people to become productive citizens able to care for themselves indignity without welfare.
