Show i ( 71 V V f ' . i DOUGLAS E. JOHNSON Douglas Johnson Files For State Senate Douglas E. Johnson, a rest-dent rest-dent of Orem for the past 14 years has announced his candidacy candi-dacy for the Utah State Senate on the Republican ticket from district 15 (northern part of Utah County). He has been an ardent supporter of the Republican Republi-can party serving as District Chairman, county committee, state convention delegate and candidate for the state legislature in 1960. Mr. Johnsonwasbornand raised rais-ed in Sandy, Utah and graduated from Jordon High School in 1944. After serving in the Air Force during World War II, he attended and graduated from the University Univer-sity of Utah in the field of Secondary Sec-ondary Education. Having received re-ceived an army commission as 2nd lieutenant, he voluntarily served three years with the field artillery during the Korean Conflict. Con-flict. Graduate studies were pursued pur-sued at the BYU where he taught American History for one year at BY High School under a graduate grad-uate assistantship award. He has been teaching AmerlcanHis-tory, AmerlcanHis-tory, Utah History and other subjects sub-jects since 1955 at the American Fork Junior High School. The Teacher's Medal of Valley Forge Freedom's Foundation was awarded to him in 1967 during ceremonies at the Salt Lake Tabernacle Tab-ernacle for notable patriotic contributions con-tributions to youth leadership. He sponsored a Get - Out - the -Vote Campaign at the school for several years as well as other activities in the Annual Americanism Amer-icanism Week', program at the school to make the study of our society more realistic and meaningful mean-ingful to the youth. Mr. Johnson has been active in the Army Reserve Program for 23 years and holds the rank of Major. He was commander of the , Pleasant Grove Reserve Unit when it was Company E, Third Battle Group, 38thlnfantry. For the past 3 years he has taught the Nuclear Weapons Em-ploymnet Em-ploymnet course and other Artillery Ar-tillery and Intelligence subjects with the Staff and Faculty, Sixth Army Area Intelligence School at Fort MacArthur, Calif. Having completed the Command and General Gen-eral Staff School he is now enrolled en-rolled in the USAR-sponsored National Security Management Course of the Industrial College, Ft. McNair, Washington, D.C. Mr. Johnson has been active in the LDS church all his life. VA VXfidl MX-li ..... , Chappie Seeks Re-Election Ralph (Dick) Chappie, Payson, announced today that he will seek re-election to the office of Utah County Sheriff on the Republican ticket. Sherriff Chappie, a native of Spanish Fork, has lived in Utah County all his life. He was a member of the Payson Police Department for 18 years andChief of Police in Payson for 12 years before being elected Utah County Sheriff. In 1957 he was named the Outstanding Out-standing Peace Officer of Utah County in the annual award made by the Footpriniers Association, and in 1969 he was named the Outstanding Peace Officer in the State by the Eagles. He is a past president of the Squaw Peak, Chapter 24, International Inter-national Footpr inters Assocla- ' 41 Ralph Chappie tlon, and a member of the Payson Volunteer Fire Department, of which he is a past chief, and a member of the Utah State Firemen's Fire-men's Association, and also an active member of the Cocklebur Riding Club. He is a past president of the Payson Lion's Club and is a member mem-ber of both the Payson Chamber of Commerce and the Provo Chamber of Commerce. A member of the LDS Church, he is active in the Boy Scout program. Sheriff Chappie is married to the former Mamie Tervort of Payson and they have entertained neighborhood children at a Christmas party In their home for the past 30 years. They have seven children. child-ren. Mr. Johnson feels there is a need for the traditional conservative conser-vative attitude in state government govern-ment and that law-makers should be responsible to its constituents for well-prepared laws. That government cannot do everything for the people, but what it does should be done efficiently and without waste of funds.
