Show Orem-Geneva Times Tuesday, May 28, 1968 CT73 IB A ILLUMINATING THE PROBLEMS. THE PEOPLE. THE ISSUES OF OUR TIME. Orem Cty To Become One of Utah's Leading Retail Sales Centers as ZCMI Prepares To Break Ground The possible groundbreaking later this year and expected completion in early 1970 of a 130,000 square-foot ZCMI store in Orem, announced this week by ZCMI officials, signals sig-nals a dramatic change in the development and expansion of retail sales 'facilities in Utah County. The pioneer Salt Lake City-based mercantile mercan-tile institution, which opened its first branch store in the Cottonwood Mall 10 years ago and second branch store in Ogden two years ago, announced plans same time "ago' to build another branch store in Orem. LOCATION OF THE Orem store will be on a 76-acre site located onState Street between 1100 South and the new 1300 South freeway diagonal to Provo oh which construction is scheduled to begin July 1. This site designated by marketing research specialists as the prime retail sales location in Utah County, has been purchased by ZCMI and two local men with a view toward constructing con-structing on it a regional shopping center which will attract patronage from all Central and Southern Utah. ' Architects' drawings and plans for the new Orem shopping center, which have been in the process of development for the past several months, show the ZCMI store as the hub of a completely enclosed air-conditioned mall. Cost of the mammoth retail sales facility is expected to exceed $10,000,000. AMONG THE VARIOUS other facilities to be included in the Orem mall will be a super market, bank, department store, an automotive automo-tive center, and an assortment of stores, men's and women's clothing stores, hardware and variety stores. As many as 50 additional stores are expected ex-pected to be built in the shopping center to .complement the many departments and services ser-vices to be included in the ZCMI store. According Ac-cording to Dean Williams, ZCMI secretary-treasurer, secretary-treasurer, the floor space in the Orem development de-velopment will be over one-half million square feet. THE SPACIOUS hard-surfaced parking lot surrounding the Orem mall will offer the largest commerical parking area in Utah County for the parking of patrons' cars. The lot will be well-lighted at night to accommo date evening shoppers until all stores are closed. According to Ralph O. Brown andDeLynn Heaps, local developers of the new Orem shopping mall, interest in the project is becoming be-coming more intense as the date for the groundbreaking nears. Numerous inquiries are being received from both national chain stores and local retail merchants regarding the availability of space in the facility. PARAMOUNT CONCERN of the developers is to integrate a carefully-selected assortment assort-ment of retail and service establishments which will contribute to the most successful operation of the shopping mall and be of the greatest interest to the shopping public. The impact of the new Orem regional shopping center on the economy of Utah C ounty is expected to be far-reaching in the view of those familiar with similiar developments in other areas. Such a facility could be expected to provide employment for an estimated 1,000 people, with a need for several hundred additional addi-tional people to be employed in many other service, food, retail and recreational institutions institu-tions in the community. AS FAR AS Orem City government is concerned, con-cerned, the optional one-half per cent sales tax to be generated by the Orem shopping mall will likely exceed by several times the $85,000 currently being collected annually by Orem City on the point-of-sale basis. When that time comes, the one-time goal of the Orem City Council to get the method of apportioning the sales tax changed to the per capita basis will no longer be a concern. When Orem's retail sales skyrocket as the natural result of the expansion of the city's business district, Orem City's share of the sales tax money will one day exceed the amount it would have gained under the apportionment appor-tionment per capita formula. AS THE TIME grows closer for construction construc-tion to get underway on Orem's new ZCMI store and shopping mall, the time is also approaching for Orem City to take it's rightful right-ful place as one of Utah's leading retail sales centers. Yes, "Good Things ARE Happening in Orem!' The downtown Salt Lake City ZCMI store was the site of ZCMI Centennial festivities recently. The pioneer Utah merchandising firm, with two stores in Salt Lake City, and one in Ogden, was organized by Brigham" Young in 1868 and has been headquartered at this downtown site since 1876. The celebration cele-bration will continue through October. Highway People Begin Process of Litter Picking The Utah County Highway Department, De-partment, in cooperation with the Utah County Sheriff, is conducting conduct-ing a clean-up of the public road , system within the county, according accord-ing to Stanley D. Roberts, Utah County Commission Chairman. 'We are trying to clean up debris, garbage, cans, and litter along the roadsides of the county. We are asking the full support of the public in making our county a showpiece instead of a dumping dump-ing ground.' said the Commissioner. Commis-sioner. Sheriff Ralph Chappie and Commissioner Roberts commented com-mented on the wide spread use of unauthorized dumping sites by the general public. They said that many of these areas are used as dumps by habit and long usage but that the users are unlawfully depositing trash in these areas instead of using the well maintained sanitafy grabage dumps of the cities if the county. The Sheriff pointed out, "it is unlawful to deposit trash or garbage or litter anywhere any-where in Utah County unless express ex-press permission is given by.' the County or by one of the , cities and unless the area is" properly posted to permit such dumping." Public pride 'and public sup port will do the job for us in Utah County if the people will be a little more conscious of the - effect each small amount of lit ter contributes to the overall general appearance of our great county with final comments of both.
