Signs Of Spring Studies By First Grade Student in Mrs. Hutchinson's first grade class at Scera Park Elementary have been studying the sips of Spring. To initiate the unit, they went for a neighborhood neigh-borhood walk, to look for signs of Spring. They saw flowers, birds, green grass and insects. They wanted to study more about insects, so Mrs. Hutchinson brought an ant house to school and the students were able to watch the ants dig tunnels in the soil. After this the children made a progressive bulletin board about insects. Inside the school room, the students learned first about the lady bug. They learned how these interesting little friends grow and that they eat many harm ful bugs. Next they studied about the moth and butterfly. They learn ed the life cycle of each and how to tell them apart. They studied the grasshoper and found it gets its name because it hops so much and lives in the grass. They also learned that only full grown grasshoper grass-hoper s have wings. Next the group studied about the honey bee and how it is helpful to man because it aids in pollinatio n and makes honey. Last of all they studied ants and found them to be very interesting. The children were very interested in studying about insects and because of this inter est they collected many insects and brought them to the classroom class-room for display and sharing. They have greatly enjoyed this unit of work. ' VERTS ENJOY COMPANY OVER WEEKEND Mr. and Mrs. Anthony F. Vert have reported that they have had family members home to visit for the week.
