RANDALL ANDERSON ROSSMILLER PHOTOGRAPHY Transfer boosts Miners' hardwood hopes amal Brown, a 6'10", 260-pound transfer from California, brings dominant presence By PETTY LARCENY Of the Record staff What do you do when your team goes 2-18? If you're Park City boys' basketball coach Ned Pitts, you bring in a winner like Janial Brown. Brown, a 610", 260-pound center from La Habra. Calif., will be moving to Park City in June, following completion of his junior jun-ior year at his hometown's Thomas Jefferson High School. A three-year starter for the Broncos, Brown averaged 14 points and eight rebounds as a freshman. "This kid is amazing." said Pitts, who was first contacted by Brown in early March. "He just called up and said his family was moving to Park City, and that he . would be interested in playing, basketball here. It was a 'no- brainer' for me." By the time he led Jefferson to a 21-3 record and the California state semifinals last month. Brown was averaging 26.3 points and 14.4 rebounds per game. Pitts is confident that the 17-year-old wunderkind will give the Miners a dominant inside presence. pres-ence. "The only thing that separated us from a lot of the other teams last season was our size," Pitts said. "We had tons of talent, but just not a lot of height. Janial Brown has both." Although Brown plays a Shaquille O'Neal-style game, clearing the lane with his.size and working his way in for dunks and mini-hook shots, he is a dependable depend-able free-throw shooter (76 percent) per-cent) and has a reliable jump shot from inside 15 feet. '"''He's the whole packager' said Pitts. "Nearly everything I've learned about him from his coaches in California is positive." The one knock on Brown is that he sometimes lacks the "killer instinct." "My coach said I was too nice," said Brown. "When we were in the playoffs in my sophomore sopho-more season, I was afraid to bang down low for fear of picking up fouls or being fouled." Still, during Jefferson's run to the semifinals this spring, Brown showed a lot more toughness than the previous season. Like O'Neal, Brown also draws plenty of fouls from defenders desperate to stop him. Instead of playing timid when being hacked in this year's playoffs, play-offs, Brown continued to take the ball to the hole. In that way, he- almost single-handedly single-handedly lifted the Broncos to a 77-71 overtime win over rival San Dimas in the quarterfinals. Brown said he is excited to move; to Party City and to help the Miners program return-to its for mer glory. "I really like Coach Pitts," he said. With Jefferson students enjoying spring break last week. Brown and his family came to Park City to look for homes, and the hoops star Uxk time to meet with Pitts and discuss the future. "I see that there are some great players on this team," he said of the Miners. "It's an honor to be a part of that. I hope to do whatever I can to help them win 20 games next season." Besides excelling on the hardwood. hard-wood. Brown earned All-State honors in football and track at Jefferson during his sophomore year. Although he gave up those sports to concentrate on basketball basket-ball before his junior season, he said he was open to participating in them again if the opportunity presents itself. Brown maintains a 3.8 GPA, is the president of the chess club at Jefferson, and plays saxophone in the school's jazz band. "You name it, he's got it," said an excited Coach Pitts. arjfcTTb ifflRSSt!SIi)35ti H&R BLOCK provides more than just tax preparation.
