Show I am not an expert on sleigh rides. I've been on two in my entire life. But those two experiences do qualify me as an expert on spending hours of slowly freezing to death. My first run-in with the hell known as sleigh rides came when I was about eight years old, and my mother, being the type of person who always pined for one of those hideous frosted Christmas trees to add to the holiday effect, decided it would be a great idea for the family to go on a sleigh ride. Well, it wasn't actually a sleigh it was some backwoods farmer's hay cart, but whatever, it was still horse-drawn. Actually, it was pulled by a mule. Anyway, you had your basic ingredients ingredi-ents horse-like creature, blankets, snow-covered scenery, crying kids, running noses, holiday cheer and sub-zero temperatures. 1 vaguely remember the frostbite creeping into my extremities before passing out. Of course, the best part of a sleigh ride is the food afterward. It serves dual purposes filling your stomach while also hopefully pumping in needed warmth. At the end of my first sleighhay ride, we were given as much Postum as we could drink. And hot Tang, which really hit the spot. It worked even better if you soaked your fingers in it. My second sleigh experience came in 'a decidedly non-alpine setting. Being the romantic I am, I chartered on of those tourist-trap buggy deals in Salt Lake City in order to propose to my wife. Corny, I know. And totally freezing. freez-ing. I couldn't even get the ring on her finger since it was so bloody swollen. I'm sure it was a sight to see two Floridians cruising down Main Street at about 2 miles per hour, so completely frozen to the core they couldn't blink their eyes.
