He had a ball he particularly enjoyed launching dinner rolls and screams throughout the Cliff Lodge Atrium, wasting his dads quarters in the arcade, riding up and down the escalators, and pushing all the buttons in the elevator. ele-vator. His parents, however, were ready to put a quick end to the I vacation by jumping out of the tram. I Winter vacations can be tough i 1,iJ 1 t un ivius auu diciiis auiic. many of the recreation activities are adult-oriented, and younger children chil-dren in particular can grow bored quicker than you can say, 'Oh dear god, what do you mean this hotel doesn't have Cartoon Network?' There are solutions, however, and they don't necessarily have to involve a day spent cruising up and down escalators. Ski lessons and day care One of the easiest things to do is simply to get away from the kids for just a second, even if it's to catch a breath or get in one ski run that doesn't involve the word 'bunny' All three Park City resorts offer ski schools andor day cares, which teach kids the joys of skiing and boarding while also keeping a watchful eye on them. Park City Mountain Resort offers ski lessons, including all-day all-day adventures, for kids as young as three and a naif. The Canyons features ski lessons les-sons for the little tykes, as well as a full-service day care. The day care is a one-stop facility that is dedicated to meeting the needs of kids 18 months or older. Deer Valley also provides a daycare day-care center. The Childrens' Center is a state-licensed facility providing supervision and activities activi-ties for non-skiing children. Tubular tubing OK, so you're not a movie star or an Enron executive holed up in Silver Lake and you therefore can't afford the resort day care. What to do? Try tubing where kids won't complain about sliding down the slopes on their backs. Gorgoza Park, which is located just off 1-80 near Kimball Junction, features lift-served tubing, tub-ing, a jib park and mini-snowmobile rides for young children. The park open Monday through Friday from 1 to 8 p.m., and weekends and holidays from noon to 8 p.m. For pricing and additional information, call 658- 2648. Bouncing off the walls The thing about hotel rooms is they're generally small. The thing about winter vacations is that the weather sometimes forces you to spend a lot of time in those hotel rooms, which, you'll remember are small. And, of course, there's not a worse combination than kids stuffed into a small room, especially if there's no Cartoon Network. Let those kids climb the walls at the Hang Time Gym (1490 Munchkin Road yes, that's the street's real name). At Hang Time, climbers of all abilities are invited to experience the challenges of rock climbing in a safe, controlled environment. Private and group lessons are available, as is rental equipment. Hang Time also offers special instruction for kids. For more informations all 649-8709. Special needs Park City is blessed with much more than pristine powder. The nearby National Ability Center offers year-round sports and recreation programs for children (and adults) with disabilities. The NAC, located off S.R. 248 (near the junction with U.S. 40), teaches teach-es alpine, cross-country and snowboard lessons, and also offers equipment rentals and ski buddies.
