CONVENIENTLY LOCATED IN THE Silver Mountain Spirit Cint & ift 2080 GOLD DUST LANE, PARK CITY MOUNTAIN TOWN NEWS 'It feels good to fall; it looses up the muscles' By ALLEN BEST Record guest writer Breck drops pre-season for European ski teams Summit County, Colo. - In 12, as Vail was readying to open, marketing mar-keting guy Bob Parker, a former ski journalist, made the tactieal decision to solicit national ski teams to train there. I lis ploy worked. The international interna-tional ski press was all over the brand-new resort. Since then, resorts hither and thither have gladly hosted ski racers during November in hopes of getting get-ting ink. Breckenridge picked up the program in the early 1990s, but two years ago dropped out. instead opening the erstwhile gated runs to the general public. How come? The issue, inevitably, comes down to money and whether the average skier cares a whit about ski racing. Aspen and Vail and perhaps other ski area operators have had something some-thing of the same debate in recent years. The Summit County Independent (Dec. 3) talked to John Locflcr, who began inviting the national teams a decade ago. He insists that mentions in European media made the trouble a no-brain-er. "You cant buy that kind of publicity," pub-licity," he said. Until at least recently, recent-ly, Breckenridge had a many visitors from foreign countries, mostly the United Kingdom. Rick Sramek, Breckenridge's mountain operations director, describes more complications. First, he doubts the value of the publicity. "I think the image value was low, because national level ski racing is not the stirt of thing that most people peo-ple can identify with. I donl believe anyone was coming to Breck saying, 'Let's go there because the Austrians ski there.' The image of alpine ski racing is less important to us than the image of other events, like freestyle skiing and snowboarding. Those are the hot events." A secondary consideration was that racing displaced the general public, causing complaints, particularly particu-larly during low-snow years. Ct$ m YEN-JING V g MANDARIN '. ? wm J f II ft 1 I I fit ! I was taking some of his runs, and he didnt like it." Copper Mountain happily picked up Breckenridgels slack, this year hosting teams from Spain, Canada, Austria and Switzerland, as well as club teams from across the United States and Canada. In snow-rich autumns, there are no complaints -there are plenty of ski trails for all. And, Copper's managers believe there is value to the international exposure, hence the resort is establishing estab-lishing long-term relationships with several international teams. Intrawesi rejects report of plan to leave Keystone Keystone, Colo. - Intrawest has been developing real estate at the base of Keystone since the mid-1990s, mid-1990s, first with ski area operator Ralston Purina and then with Vail Resorts, which acquired Ralston Purina. At a recent meeting with a homeowners group, Keystone citizens citi-zens League, new chief operating officer Roger McCarthy predicted that Intrawest will be leaving the project, called River Run. Soon after, Intrawest's regional vice president, Paul Stashick, said Intrawest is not now taking any such steps. "If and when there is ever a change in our partnership status, you will not hear it at a dinner party or a homeowners' meeting first," he told the Summit Daily News (Dec 4). "It will be disclosed to our lenders and shareholders first and the general public second. "I'm still the vice president of Keystone Real Estate Development," he said, referring to the VailIntrawest partnership. "I'm the one that speaks on behalf of that, not Roger (McCarthy)." McCarthy told the newspaper he had no further comment. Stashick confirmed widespread, rumors of strain in the relationship; between Intrawest and Vail at the project. The two are competitors on! many other fronts. Stashick: described the relationship at Keystone as being like a married couple sleeping in separate rooms. .
