Steptei ZujyjWRK RECORD 1 AW Me fVw to make sure your woodpile is well stacked" for the coming season. Woodstove Ti jf There is nothing tike a cold winter evening Sy the fire With sunny skies and temperatures tem-peratures still hovering in the 70s, few Parkites have winter -and cozy nights by the fireplace -on their minds. But fall is definitely prime time to prepare your fireplace, chimney and woodpile for the cold nights that are sure to arrive in the coming weeks. Larry Mears, owner and operator 01 Mad Hatter T"""""1 ' Professional Chimney Sweep J J in Park City, says homeown- ? f ers should have their fire- i. places and chimneys inspected if they are unsure about their safety and cleanliness. "Now's the time to get an inspection," says Mears. We'll see if Ithe chimneys are dirty, and if there are any other types of problems." Ihe longtime Park City chimney sweeper says 50 to 60 percent his residential customers have a yearly chimney and fireplace inspection. "It should be inspected yearly, unless a pattern is set," says Mears. Types of wood burned and the frequency of fireplace use affect the need for chimney inspection and cleaning. Chimney sweeping is important, Mears says, for safety reasons. "It's a safety issue for the whole system, and to contain a fire," he says. Ash and other byproducts that build up inside chimneys can create a "very flammable situation" situa-tion" and have to potential to start home fires if left unchecked. As for firewood specifics, Gary Goff, a firewood salesman from West Valley City, said pinion pine and cedar are the most popular. pop-ular. "They are the two most requested and popular out there," says Goff. Cedar and pinion pine are hard woods, which causes them to burn longer and hotter. Goff says most customers burn one or two cords of wood a winter. One cord is defined as a . four foot bv four foot bv eight ; foot pile ot nrewood. Goff urges homeowners find a dry place to store their wood. "One thing I do recom mend... is if the wood is stored "i r: L - outside, to cover it , with a tarp," he says. I "To let it get snowed p on defeats the whole purpose." Firewood is dried out upon delivery, deliv-ery, .allowing for opti-, opti-, mum burning. Any I moisture that gets into the wood decreases its effectiveness. 4, Goff recommends XyfDA wadded-up newspaper pages and chipped-off pieces of wood, or kindling, to get a lire oing. Once the newspaper and undling are burning, add more logs. If using a natural gas line in the fireplace, Goff recommends turning the gas off once the logs are steadily burning. .1 1 227" 0526 FALL HOME IMPROVEMENT atfoE 2oo1 |
