At 4:15 p.m. men and women in wheelchairs rolled onto the tracks at 100 South and Main streets in downtown Salt Lake and stayed there chanting, "Hey, hey, ho, ho, the fare increase has got to go." TRAX passengers got off the stopped trains and caught another train about a block away. Some yelled at the protesters. "You're holding us up too, jerks" shouted Jeff West, who was heading home to Draper. "Where are the police, this is ridiculous." Barbara Toomer, a longtime advocate for the disabled, said, ' This is just the first salvo. It doesn't does-n't make us happy to come out here and ruin people's day. we really won't be happy until it's fair." The UTA says is proposing steeper fare hike for Flextrans because it costs more to provide that service. A witness saw it happen, but it was too late for Bob. The dog owner is described as possibly late 40's, with thinning grey hair, darker on top, medium build, and he was jogging on the rail trail with black running clothes. One dog is a black lab, and the more aggressive dog is perhaps a black lab mix with coarser hair & a bushy, curled-up tail. Please call us with any leads. Single-ride tickets then were 50 cents; they now are $1. The UTA is considering raising fares to $130 for Flextrans service and $1.25 for regular customers on Jan. 1. The $1.25 per trip fee would be locked in over the next three years, but ticket prices for Flextrans users would jump to $2 in 2003 and to $230 in 2004. Monthly passes, while increasing increas-ing by $13 to $45 a month for regular-service passengers by 2003, would go up from the current $32 a month for Flextrans to $90 in 2004. i The protesters contend the handicapped cannot afford $90 a month, and they will be forced to just remain home lowering tb,e demand on UTA for the service. The UTA contends that for every $1 fare it collects frotti Flextrans riders, it has to kick ip nearly $24. Pilot retraces Earhart's route PROVO, Utah (AP) Carlene Mendieta doffed her white cotton twill helmet, hoisted hoist-ed herself out of the open-air cockpit and swung a jodhpur-clad jodhpur-clad leg onto a wing. "Red carpet treatment!" she laughed, as she spotted the rectangular rec-tangular mat placed beside her blue-and-silver Avro Avian biplane. The California periodontist touched down at Provo Municipal Airport Tuesday afternoon on the eastward leg of her three-week retracing of Amelia Earhart's 1928 flight across America and back. Mendieta is trying to land at the same cities where Earhart touched down. She was scheduled sched-uled to fly into Salt Lake City, but civil-aviation restrictions imposed after the Sept. 11 terrorist ter-rorist attacks forced her to switch to Provo's smaller airport. Mendieta, 47, planned to drive to Salt Lake City Wednesday to retrace Earhart's stay in the city. She planned to return to Provo and fly on to Cheyenne, Wyo. Mendieta said the directive that prevents her from flying in terminal-controlled airspace isnt a hardship. "Actually, that's a restriction I kind of like," she said. "It's more fun in this kind of plane." When possible, Mendieta is staying in the same hotels as Earhart and eating the same food, donning 1920s dinner garb to eat out at night. Mendieta said her respect for Earhart, who disappeared in the Pacific with navigator Fred Noonan on a 1937 attempt to fly around the world, has grown since she set out from New York's Westchester County Airport on Sept. 5. "This is a long, grueling trip," Mendieta said. "She (Earhart) didnt have navigational equipment. equip-ment. She had a less reliable engine with less power. She didnt did-nt have a chase plane." Accompanying Mendieta is a chase plane, piloted by Greg Herrick, owner of the Avro Avian and president of HistoricAviation.com, which is sponsoring the flight, and carrying carry-ing two mechanics. Reconstruction would include widening of the road and inclusion of a passing lane on both sides of the mountain. The project would take place in two stages, with the first, a 2.8-niile leg from Yellowstone to the Snake River picnic area, to occur in late 2002 or early 2003. The second stage would improve 7.7 miles from the picnic area to the Lizard Creek Campground during the summer and fall of 2003 and spring of 2004.
