Jim Doilney Candidate Mayor I see these differences between j my opponents and me: Experience: I have a Ph.D. in Urban EconomicsPublic Finance, and was a National Science Foundation Fellow in .Environmental Economics. I've developed several affordable-housing affordable-housing neighborhoods. I've served as mayor pro tern and councilman. I'm eager to use my expertise to develop fiscally sound ways to provide cleaner, more abundant water, safeguard open : space, and create a post-Olympic - economic plan. EffortsResults: My actions 'have always spoken as loudly as ' my words. I'm the only candidate 'who (with partners) has actually dedicated open space (400-plus Jim Hier ; Candidate City Council I love living in a resort town, and our successful future depends on the resort economy that we enjoy. My background in financial planning plan-ning and control, resort business management, lodging management and community planning provides a well-rounded base for making sound decisions for our community. ; I am committed to controlled and planned growth, preservation of open space and maintaining the ; charm and character of the Historic 'District My qualifications include 4 12 Jim Hier years oa the Park City Planning Commission, two years on the Park CitySnyderville Basin Joint Planning Commission Sub-Committee, Sub-Committee, and two years on the Citizens Open Space Advisory Committee. My most applicable career experience includes the ownership own-ership of a successful restaurant on Main Street in Telluride for 10 years, and the past four years as Controller for East West Resorts. Park City's economy is based on the ski industry, tourism and the hospitality businesses. My actions will focus on supporting the basics of our economy, protecting the quality qual-ity of life that our town offers and trying to have a little fun in the process. My years on the Planning Commission have been very educational educa-tional and gratifying, and I expect that service on the City Council will be equally rewarding. Michael Kaplan Candidate City Council It would be neither prudent nor productive to assail other candidates. candi-dates. Regardless of the election outcome, we all must live and work together to improve our community. I am concerned that some candidates candi-dates have campaigns based on "wish-list" political platforms, without with-out regard to the costs or practicality, practicali-ty, and often without offering plausible plausi-ble solutions. I have offered clear and accomplishable accom-plishable goals: 1. Economic Development: Bring more events, festivals, conventions, f -..,,..,.-ui,m,..iii-i.i.. ,11.1111. .mui !! t '- On Tuesday, Oct. 2, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Locations and districts are Marsac Building (District 1 . Also, I co-founded Infinite Sum Growth, a common-sense approach to preserving pre-serving open space (despite good intentions, Fred and Dana's Flagstaff battle yielded a net loss of open space). With partners, I've donated more than $500,000 to schools and a residence to Habitat for Humanity. I alerted the community com-munity about the health risks posed by arsenic in our drinking water. Make Main Street a center of our community by staging more activities activi-ties and working to reform liquor laws. 3. Improve city government access and cooperation. 4. Develop a local ice rink. 5. Work with the ski resorts for interchangeable season passes and lift tickets. I am an adjunct professor of business at the University of Utah and Westminster College. I will utilize uti-lize my businessmarketing background back-ground to accomplish the above goals. As a Main Street business owner, I am familiar with the challenges chal-lenges facing our business community. commu-nity. We need a local business voice on our council (we currently lack representation). I'm also involved with several civic associations. I appreciate and applaud the other candidates for getting involved and sharing their ideas. Jeff Mann Incumbent Candidate City Council The biggest difference between me and the other candidates is my 12 years' experience in banking, insurance and financial planning (I'm a vice-president with Zion's Jeff Mann Bank, Park City). This background proved invaluable during the Council's review of the city budget Moreover, Park City residents want Candidates for Workable Solutions: Voters deserve more than vague promises. promis-es. My campaign material reveals specific solutions for our critical challenges. Voters can decide for themselves if they like my ideas. 1 ask my opponents "Where are YOUR solutions?" Fred Jones Candidate Mayor I am running for mayor because of my commitment to the future of Park City. We have many challenges chal-lenges ahead of us. I understand the complexities of our city and believe that with my leadership and experience, we can meet the challenges and continue to prosper pros-per as one of the finest communities communi-ties in the world. Prior to being elected to City Council two years ago, I was a member of the planning commission commis-sion for eight years. I have also served as the chairman of two school boards and a board member mem-ber of several governmental entities enti-ties in other communities. Prior to moving to Park City, I managed ski resorts for 18 years in CEO Candidates for Park City Council safer, more abundant water, more open space and better recreational facilities. These benefits will cost money, just as our nation is entering an economically uncertain period. The more our public officials understand under-stand financial matters, the better we'll be able to achieve our goals in a fiscally responsible manner. I've learned about community needs through volunteer work with the People's Health Center, the Park CitySummit County Arts Council and the United States Ski and Snowboard Team. This experience experi-ence helps me serve Park City better. bet-ter. Finally, my council service provides pro-vides a good measure of my effectiveness. effec-tiveness. Voters have seen me make tough decisions on water, impact fees and the Olympic celebration. They saw how I built consensus to reduce the proliferation of news racks in the Historic District and stood firm against the large entrance sign on S.R. 224. I ask those who approve of my job performance per-formance to vote for me Oct 2 and Nov. 6. Luci Sosnowski Candidate City Council The difference is my background. back-ground. A single parent with little or no child support, I worked full time while putting myself through college. col-lege. Coming from a blue-collar family, I understand the value and rewards of hard work. My educational educa-tional and working backgrounds Luci Sosnowski will be of merit in terms of the direction direc-tion in which the city needs to proceed. pro-ceed. I've worked jobs from waitress wait-ress and bartender to the criminal justice field to youth programs to public housing and real estate to retail sales and management to my own business of sewing and alterations. alter-ations. I believe there are times when one needs to get back to basics in order to get past some of the "stuff" that life throws at you and that the return to those basics will give one insight into direction for the future. Park City seems to be at that time in its life. With the Olympics soon to be here and gone, we need to re-assess its future. Common sense and reality need to become the rule rather than the exception when making decisions for the city. The city, with an annual budget of over $30 million, is a complex operation. Seasoned leadership is needed to deal with the many challenges chal-lenges facing us in these uncertain economic times while, at the same time, keeping a focus on our future.- Fred Jones If elected, I will provide strong fiscal fis-cal management I will also continue contin-ue my initiative to provide additional addi-tional recreational facilities for our unlimited and neither is the patience of the citizens too often forgotten by our governing bodies. Jeff Zenger Candidate City Council This election and our problems seem insignificant compared to recent events. There are changes and challenges to come. I'm a native Utahn, married, no kids yet, one degree in business and another in recreation. I lived and worked in many different places and came back to Utah and Park City in 1985. I don't have a lot of experience in government or business, so my head is not full of policies, procedures and preconceptions. I. like to keep Jeff Zenger things simple and get input from everyone before I make a decision. Here are some of my priorities Provide for our security at the Olympics. Preserve our remaining open space and control growth. I will vote against new development. Acquire and preserve existing affordable housing in town. Expand public transit as far and as fast as we can. Get rid of the parking meters. We can enforce time limits without them. Building another parking structure struc-ture is not the way to encourage public transit. We can learn to conserve water. Bringing in more water in a pipeline will increase demand, consumption and construction until we are up against another shortage. We have a great community. I want to be involved in our future. Mark Blue Candidate City Council What make me different from the other candidates are length of residence in Park City, experience in the service industry and age. I've worked in Park City for 12 years Deer Valley was only 7 years old and I was an employee. I saw ski instructors becoming realtors and selling some of the most expensive property in Utah. I realized then that Park City's growth was exponential. expo-nential. Everybody wants his or her t' t , -v. .. r ' - - -- ( V 37 j community. Park City is a terrific place to live and I want to play a responsible role in its future. Dana Williams Candidate Mayor Twelve years ago, my wife and I decided to move from the family farm in Summit County into Park City. Even though I had run a business on Main Street, our lives were focused on babies and a solitary soli-tary farmer's life. After moving to town and seeing the daily occurrences occur-rences around our community, I was troubled that, in our quest to become a world-class resort, the impacts were outweighing the benefits: First, the loss of open space. I was determined to raise awareness of the need to permanently protect pro-tect open lands. So, I showed up! Secondly, the rapid sprawl occurring occur-ring in both city and surrounding areas. At council and commission meetings, citizen attendance was sparse, and there appeared to be little lit-tle concern for codes. So, I showed up! Mark Blue piece of land further and" further from the big city. Working here in Park City, I have seen the speed of growth. I know things in this town don't always work the way we would like them to (i.e. Yellow Bike Program), but that does not mean ignoring new and alternative programs pro-grams to help us grow wisely. I've worked in the service industry, indus-try, which includes lodging, restaurants restau-rants and construction. In all these businesses, I've seen lots of waste. In the lodging industry steps to streamline have cut some of the waste. In the restaurants, glass is the biggest waste. In construction, the waste is mostly wood. As a councilor coun-cilor I would like to be able try new and different recycling programs to the largest producers of recyclable waste. Jeff Brueningsen Candidate City Council The largest difference is that I have seen in an up close and all too personal way the very real damage some aloof and unresponsive city leaders can cause. For two years, other owners and I at the Prospector Condominiums have asked the city for protection from blatant violations of laws and ordinances. The list includes an illegal ille-gal commercial laundry in a residential residen-tial building, theft of services, immigrant immi-grant exploitation, criminal refusal to examine the corporate books and stalking, home invasion and a beating beat-ing that resulted in one owner's hos Jeff Brueningsen r- 1 ., . . Finally, as a parent, the need for safe places for our kids to "hang out." So, I showed up! Being Mayor of Park City is not just about issues. It's about passion: pas-sion: passion for the mountains, our diversity and our quality of life. It's about all of us! pitalization for stitches to the head. To this date, the criminals have not been prosecuted in any way. Challenges to Marsac Affordable housing - City executives told the candidates, "This is not a priority". Law Enforcement - Mr. Daley, to paraphrase the President, "either you are with us, the victims of crime, or you are with the criminals." Prosecute criminals, not victims. Spending -1 challenge the city to lower departmental spending, if the state can drop four percent in one year. Conservation Let's see Park City lead the West in water conservation. conser-vation. Please help me make these changes. I'm up for the challenge and would appreciate your vote. Kay Calvert Candidate City Council Strong leadership skills are required for this position. Over the past 20 years, I have held executive positions at Xerox, Compaq and Lotus Development. I have managed man-aged large and small organizations and believe my strongest skill set is the ability to think strategically, while paying close attention to the tactical day-to-day responsibilities. My track record speaks for itself. This experience will benefit our town, should I be elected. I have served in a similar capacity capaci-ty since 1995 as a member of the Kay Calvert Utah State Building Board. I was appointed by Governor Leavitt and hold the position of secretarytreasurer. secretarytrea-surer. In 2000, this board was responsible for changing the procurement pro-curement policy for the state, something some-thing that many legislators doubted could happen. Our success was the result of strong leadership and teamwork on the part of each board member. There are many issues that I am Eassionate about, and this passion as prompted me to seek an elected position. However, I believe voters elect leaders, not issues. The recent tragedy in New York is a case in point This horror was clearly unanticipated unan-ticipated but is being effectively managed by strong leadership and teamwork - something we should expect from all elected officials. as follows: R COPY |
