Airline employees and federal authorities who gathered Tuesday to discuss the growing problem of air rage agree alcohol is a common denominator with many of the incidents. Representatives from American. Delta, TWA and other airlines that fly out of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport met with authorities to discuss the problem. The conference drew about 70 people and focused on how DFW handles air-rage incidents. "We're all concerned about the safety of the flying public." said Alvy Dodson. director of the DFW; Department of Public Safety. Airline employees, he said, "are there to do a job, and they should be able to do their job." The rising number of "disruptive-passenger" incidents prompted the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the airport to conduct the conference to ensure everyone understands their roles in handling the incidents, said Dodson. DFW security responded to 46 air rage incidents in 1999 and 36 so far this year. "We're probably going to top last year's number," said Dodson. Federal officials recently reported a dramatic increase in air-rage incidents nationwide. Statistics from the Federal Aviation Administration showed 292 incidents of "unruly passengers" passen-gers" last vear, up from 138 in 1995. A passenger can be classified as disruptive for anything from being verbally abusive to fellow passengers to hitting crew members mem-bers and trying to get into the cockpit. Penalties range from small civil fines to 20 years in prison, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Fred Schattman. "The degree of conduct is generally what governs what action is taken." he said. Last year, the maximum fine for assaulting a crew member was increased from $1,100 to $25,000. Disrupting a flight can bring 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Lonnie Glov.r. a representative representa-tive for the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, said alcohol often plays a role in disruptive incidents.
