The Park City Library and Starbucks are teaming team-ing up to improve that statistic by creating more opportunities for children to read The second annual "All Books for Children-book Children-book drive is designed to inspire children to discover the joys of reading. According to Park City-Library City-Library Director Carol Simmons, last year's drive pro duced 200 children's btxks. "It's great for literacy," she said. This year, the organizers hope to collect col-lect new and gently used books (in both English and Spanish) for children. To donate books, drop them off at Starbucks on Main Street by Oct. 3. VZ "The W of the Gun" At first glance, "The Way of the Gun" would seem to be good news, since it the directorial debut of Christopher MacOuarrie. who wrote "The Usual Suspects" for filmmaker Bryan Singer. Unfortunately, the results here are more like MacQuarrie-Singer's debut at the Sundance Film Festival, "Public Access." which started off as intriguing and offbeat, off-beat, and ended up as a quirky mess. The "heroes" are a pair of roving rov-ing thugs named Parker ( Ryan Philippe) and Longbaugh (Benicio Del Toro) and. as an early street fight show, these tough guys can land some good blows, but they can also get in way over their heads. They hatch a scheme to kidnap the very pregnant Robin (Juliette Lewis) w no's acting as a surrogate mother for a millionaire with mob connections (Scott Wilson) and his enigmatic wife (Knslin Lehman). In a segment that illustrates the film's off-kilter style (filmed in Salt Lake, by the way), the pair manage to spirit Robin away from her straight-faced straight-faced Yuppie body guards (Tayc Diggs, Nicky Katt) by violating most of the rules lot car chases on city streets. The millionaire brings in an aging "bagman" Joe Sarno (James Caan), giving the kind of low-key mumbled performance that in his younger days, suggested that he was failing asleep. Age has improved him and the grizzled, bull-headed veteran can imply untold menace when he declares that "1 will have my dratheis." Also involved is Robing wimpy, emotionally -involved obsietrician (Dylan Kussman) who is also the millionaires son. and who is fated to get slapped around by just about everybody. With its oddball criminals and frequent gunplay, the film has been referred to as a late entry in the pseudo-Tarantmo Film Sweepstakes. But there's at least a coherent world view from directors like Taranlino (whose bad guvs grew up with Big Macs and "70s TV shows just like the res! of us), like the Coen Brothers (who use their backdrops, in Texas or Minnesota, to suggest w hy their criminals ha e a screw louse); or even MacOuame 'lumself. depicting a world where outlaws still believe in a Boogeyman named Keyser Soze. "Way of the Gun." rather, kxks more like a pretentious cult- hunpean wannabe Its characters are surly existential posers: they philosophize constantly ("When I see God. I'll tell him I was framed ") and in a confused and violent situation, situa-tion, their first impulse is to point a gun at somebody. ANYBODY. Toward the end of the film, you canl tell if the impulsive Parker and Longbaugh will give in to their spasms of conscience, if they're still drawn to the money; or if they just w ant to shoot some guys. It's too bad. because the movie has some intriguing vignettes that just donl. add up to a whole plot. A tnopcy sjdekkk (Geoffrey Lewis, father of Juliette) ts contemplating suKide. but is recruited by Sarno for an assignment that spells his doom anyway. The final Peckinpah-influ-enccd shootout, in a dusty Mexican town, involv es a squad of pot-gutted aging hitman. And (in a nice jab at shoot -m-up theatrics) Parker finds that bvfi .e you leap into an old abandoned water fountain, it's probably a good idea to check for broken glass. . . v i Kick Brough has bttn in the dark nihe vW, ruing film m irn s for the Record and covering cover-ing the Sundance Film Festival He can also be heard as .J news correspondent corre-spondent for 91.9 KPCW Price Red'u cedt:!
