Utah (AP) City Council members are having trouble trou-ble remembering the council approved allowing beer sales at Olympic-related events at The Peaks Ice Arena. They also dont know what will happen if they refuse to amend city ordinances to allow the beer sales. Adding to the confusion is conflicting con-flicting information as to whether the Salt Lake Organizing Committee is asking them to allow the sales. ,. ;- . . The council spent about 45 min utes Tuesday hashing out the beer issue before deciding to continue the item until Oct. 3. The agreement between SLOC and the Ice Sheet Authority Board, which is made up of city and Utah County officials, gives SLOC authority over beverage sales during dur-ing Olympic-related events. Anheuser-Busch, which makes Budweiser beer, is an Olympic sponsor. Mayor Lwis K. Billings previously previ-ously reminded the council that SLOC is helping pay for the ice sheet and still owes the city $3 million. mil-lion. Billings is a member of SLOC and is on the Ice Sheet Authority Board. "I would hate to think we are being held hostage." Councilman Dennis Poulsen said Tuesday. Other council members simply have a problem with the beer sales. Councilman Paul Warner said he believes serving alcohol at the venue is "a contradiction of what the Olympics is all about." Councilman Stan Lockhart said the city ordinances should stand as they are. ' It's a solution in search of a problem." Lockhart said. Councilman Gregory Hudnali said they should take time to study the issue, and consult with the mayor, who was in China visiting Provo's sister citv. Nanning. Minutes from a Jan. 20. 1998. council meeting she council members mem-bers discussed the issue of alcoholic beverages at the venue at that meeting meet-ing and signed a resolution in support sup-port of the agreement between SLOC and the ice Sheet Authority Board.
