Pari; City ,4i5' MJ-5259 questions(rarkcitvlab.com submitted by the Federal Communications Commission As America enters the Information Age, too many of its original inhabitants are still suffering suffer-ing from an Information Divide. According to the 1W0 Census, less than half of Native American households on reservations possess that most basic of telecommunications telecommunica-tions services, the telephone (as compared to 94 percent of all Americans) To help remedy this problem, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), in cooperation with the National Exchange Carrier Association, will t conducting the Indian Telecom Training Initiative (ITT 1 2000), a four-day tribal leader telecommunications seminar. This historic training event, which takes place Sept. 25 through 28 at the Radisson Hotel in St. Paul, Minn , will provide tribal leaders with the best and most up-to-date informs tion available to help increase telecommunications services in native communities. In addition, a limited number of scholarships are available to tribal governments that wish to attend ITTI 2000 but may not have the financial resources. "We all must work to bridge the telecommunications divide separating separat-ing tribal lands from the rest of America," argues FCC Chairman William E. Kennard. "All Americans should have equal access to the opportunities of the information Age. This training event is an important step in the right direction." ITTI 2000 is designed to help bridge this telecommunication divide for tribal residents, namely by providing tribal leaders with information on how to find and make decisions about telecommuni cations service solutions. ITTI 2000 will also identify resources available to tribal residents to assist their efforts in securing access to and improving the affordability of telecommunications services on tribal reservations. Over 50 experts from U.S. agencies, tribal communities, communi-ties, the private sector, and foundations founda-tions will provide technical, financial finan-cial and regulatory information to tribal leaders about the telecommunications telecommu-nications industry. Co-sponsors of the event include: ALLTEL, AT&T, BellSouth, CHR Solutions, CIRI.
