Show j Saturday, December 5, 1998 The Park Record B-11 Edge wise by Ken Mattson PCMR Ski and Snowboard School instructor O Hands, up! JP'WUWW-Jl.lM,.ll-ll.J.IUlipiWIl, If you look at the average tnowboarder riding on the hill, tyou will notice that he is usually yiding with their hands at their I ides. This probably means they ; -are lazy, or perhaps haven't been ; schooled in the benefits of using Itheir hands while snowboarding. : As a lower level rider, having ' your hands up helps tremendously with balance and control. Try having hav-ing one hand over your toe-edge 'and the other over your heel-edge. ' 'This will keep your upper-body open, and anticipated toward the turn. Try starting the turn by pointing your forward hand downhill. As an upper-level rider, try holding your hands up, and parallel paral-lel with the slope. Holding you hands parallel will put you in an angulated body position, thus will give you stronger edge control, and help with dynamic balance. Last but not least, if you ride freestyle, and love to jump and spin, use your hands and arms to control the rate of rotation you desire to perform certain tricks, sort of like an Olympic ice skater would while spinning. Ken Mattson is a certified ski and snowboard instructor and snowboard staff trainer at Park Citv Mountain Resort.
