Martha Stewart: Gift giving is one of the most enjoyable parts of the holiday season, but choosing choos-ing presents for everyone on the list can be a considerable challenge. chal-lenge. You want to find gifts that don't exceed the budget yet are still personal and appreciated. appreciat-ed. One of my favorite solutions to this annual dilemma is the assembly-line gift: The basics are the same for each package, but you can personalize the details as much as you like, tailoring tai-loring each gift to its recipient. With a bit of advance planning, you can put together two or three or even several dozen gifts at once. Here are some ideas: A warming cup Scour antiques shops and tag sales for vintage cafe au lait bowls and teacups, or buy new, inexpensive ceramic bowls and mugs. Fill each bowl or cup with all the makings of homemade hot chocolate: the very best cocoa powder, vanilla beans, cinnamon sticks, miniature marshmallows and a recipe. Or, if your gift is going to a coffee lover, include packages of gourmet coffee beans, flavored sugars and perhaps a pretty spoon. For tea drinkers, tuck a package of loose tea leaves, a tea ball or strainer, honey and fresh ginger into a generous teacup. Instead of wrapping these bundles, just tie them with a bow. Cookie box A fresh batch of homemade cookies is always a welcome gift. After all the care you put into baking, it seems a shame to relegate rele-gate these artful creations to cardboard boxes or plastic wrap. , For "boxes" that are actually gifts themselves, try packaging cookies in unusual containers PHOTO BY ANTHONY COTSIFAS season. Simply scour antiques or buy new, inexpensive ceram- such as aluminum cake pans, pudding molds, old-fashioned ice cream buckets or simple wooden boxes from an art-supply or crafts store all of which can be saved and reused. Line them first with colored waxed paper, parchment or other attractive paper. If a container doesn't have a lid, cut another piece of paper to cover, and secure it with ribbon. Bottle wrap Bottles of wine, liqueur or wonderful oils and vinegars make excellent presents. In a pinch, a simple bow wrapped around the neck will do. For a more thoughtful and festive presentation, try wrapping bottles bot-tles in colorful fabric. You will need two bottles that are approximately the same size and two different-colored pieces of fabric, each about 28 inches square. Pin the fabric pieces with right sides together, and stitch together along the perimeter, leaving a 2 12-inch gap. Turn the fabric right side out, and iron flat. Place the fabric on a table, with a corner facing you. Take hold of the ends of the material on the right and left sides and lift them up, bringing bring-ing the bottles upright. Tie the ends together in a loose knot, and tuck the triangular flap between the bottles. Tuck a sprig of holly and a gift card into the knot. Customized stockings The Christmas stocking encapsulates the excitement and anticipation of the holiday in a small, festive package. Choose colorful, oversize socks, or sew velvet or felt into simple handmade hand-made stockings. Fill with lots of little surprises homemade goodies from your kitchen, tapes or CDs of favorite music, small soaps, a set of pencils pen-cils and notepads or choose a single theme for each person based on a favorite hobby, such as golf, cooking or sewing. Flower-arranging kit While it's always nice to receive flowers, the gift lasts only until the blooms fade. A more permanent present is a flower-arranging kit. Select a new or antique vase, and fill it with all the supplies necessary for maintaining a healthy bouquet. Include a metal flower frog, packaged flo- , , ral clay, a pair of flower scissors A Jaguar is too rewarding to be enjoyed by only one owner. Pack a small basket or box with a natural-bristle scrub brush, a few scented soaps, moisturizing body oil and votive candles to help set a relaxing mood. Include some aromatic herbs or essential oils for the bath water as well: Chamomile is known for its soothing qualities; lavender may ease insomnia and fatigue; and rosemary is recommended recom-mended for relieving headaches, stimulating circulation and even easing jet lag.
