It is an ideal jogging loop. One day I noticed the historical his-torical marker at the bottom of an unexceptional hill. Newer houses stood nearby, seemingly held at bay by the unassuming marker. I remember reading the plaque and looking up in amazement amaze-ment at the slope hemmed in by stand's of pine and scrub oak and imagining the wooden runway up there where men (60 years ago) were learning to fly. Alan Engen's monograph, "For the Love of Skiing: A Visual History" is a fascinating survey of the career of Alan's father, the estimable Alf Engen. It is mentioned several times, however, that this is not just a book about one man, for Alf Engen's career is intimately tied to skiing in the Intermountain West, particularly Alta and Park City. Indeed, the most interesting facet of this book for folks around here will be the stories and photographs of "Alf and company's" exploits in and around Park City. Hamill CD Continued from B-1 three or four times each week on Channel 8. He is also planning a Father's Day televisionvideo special in conjunction with a film fgfiF. Evers Dr. Cress Bohnn Dr. Chris Hays lew The story is almost a golden parable of success: a young immigrant from Norway makes his way to America in search of opportunity and, through his own hard work and skills, ends up an innovative American hero. It is a dream fulfilled, but unavoidably bittersweet from a local perspective. As I looked at the various historical his-torical photographs of the brothers broth-ers Engen and friends taken around Park City in the early 1930s, I found it hard not to lament the loss of our innocence. Condominium subdivisions now encroach upon the old jumping sites. A picture of Sverre Engen, Alf's brother, rebuilding the jump at Ecker Hill in summer with a team of horses shows the beautiful pristine pris-tine hills and basin of Snyderville devoid of development. develop-ment. Other photographs and descriptions of the early days of ski jumping at Ecker Hill, Creole Hill and the Rasmussen jump-ing-hill portray it as a movement of, from, and for the people. A communal effort begun by a handful of Norwegian immigrants immi-grants that snowballed (if you'll permit the metaphor) and picked up the imaginations of all in its path. Today, with the Olympics on the way, the earthmovers have replaced the team of horses on the hill at the Winter Sports Park and the corporations and is a tribute to company in Salt Lake City. Anyone interested in attending attend-ing the CD release party next Tuesday night should call 649- . 2544 to RSVP.
