VA1I' I-MWit m i by Kat James OF THE RECORD STAFF Legendary folksinger John Stewart kicked off the Wooden Dog Celebrity Series Sunday night at the Inn at Prospector Square. The theater, while not filled to capacity, held a couple hundred loyal fans, myself included. 'As a former folkcountry musician, I have loved and performed many of his songs over the years and, during the 70s and '80s, even played in some of the same nightclubs (he was paid a lot more). The evening got off to a slightly late and shaky start, due in part to Stewart's traveling schedule on the "busiest travel day of the year" and a few minutes of fiddling with the sound system. No one seemed to care, though, and the problems, along with the intimacy of the room, just served to encourage more conversation between performer per-former and crowd. For those unfamiliar with John Stewart s music, he has been writing songs and performing for better than 40 years. He was part of the Kingston Trio in the early '60s, following fol-lowing Dave Guard's departure, and penned a number of their hits including "Chilly Winds" and "The Reverend Mr. Black." After leaving the Trio, he performed on his own and with his wife, Buffy Ford. He has recorded with artists such as Stevie Nicks, Nanci Griffith, John Denver and Linda Ronstadt and has written hit songs for Roseanne Cash and the Monkees, among others. oth-ers. As the concert got underway, it was apparent that Stewart was having hav-ing some vocal problems. His voice seemed a bit weak and frail, but he delivered his lyrical poetry without hesitation or excuses. (It seems that he hasnt performed for a while due to his wife's recurrent medical problems prob-lems we wish her well.) His unique rhythmic style of acoustic finger-picking is mesmerizing and as intricate as ever. Talented bass player Dave Batti, along with his instrumental contributions and complementary harmonies, played straight man for Stewart's casual brand of humor. They have worked together since the early '80s, often "tele-rehearsing." new songs, as he lives in Southern California while Stewart calls San Francisco home. The rapport rap-port they share on stage just adds to the "living-room" feel of the performance. per-formance. Stewart performed a number of old favorites at the urging of the audience, including "July You're a Woman," "Pirates of Stone County Road" and "Armstrong." He told of being at Cape Canaveral for John Glenn's recent space launch, and threw in a few anecdotes about other astronauts, including Neil Armstrong. The concert maintained a flexibility as fans yelled out requests and Stewart obliged, many tunes coming from his "Rough Sketches" and "California Bloodlines" albums. He also performed a 1950s-style tribute to the birth of rock 'n' roll, along with a clever tune, "I want to be Elvis," and recounted his early high-school memories of the King and his music. Stewart's poetry might be described as "metaphysical Americana." He's a patriot who clings to a spiritual ideal and his lyrics abound with thought-provoking images of angels and dreamers. As a political activist in the '60s, he participated in the civil rights movement move-ment and composed "The Last , sr. , Holiday Village Mall 3 WJWWW 649-6541 Movie Phone 801-333-FILM256 MEET JOE BLACK SOONER OR LATER EVERYONE DOES mMI A.NMIONY rtTri PITT HOPKINS -3- Mon.-Fri. 4:30 & 8:15 PM Sat. & Sun. 1 :00, 4:30. 7:00 & 9:40 PM r THE WATERBOY Adam Sandler e TOUCHSTONE PICTURES Mon.-Fri. 4:00, 7:15 & 9:25 PM Sat. &Sun.1:15, 4:00, 7:15 & 9:25 PM Enemy of The State R Mon.-Fri. 4:15, 7:00 & 9:40 PM Sat. & Sun. 1:30, 4:15, 7:00 & 9:40 PM NO PASSES OR SUPERSAVERS The New York Times crossword puzzle : MONEY CHANGING ; ACROSS brighten 8 Old-time cars - 1 Classic soft 70 Hebrew letters 9 Family head - drink 71 Annoys 10 Compensate '. 5 Exaggerate 72 Places lor for I-II L.I.R.R. stops plants It Part of a letter '. 15 Illustrator 73 Acidic prefix 12 Traffic Silvcrstein 75 "Beat it!" 13 Washday brand -;i9 Wharton grad. 76 "Didn't I tell 14 Identical Z- maybe you?" 15 Polishes . 20 "... upon 77 Lighthouse 16 Part of some receipt " locale palaces Z 21 First name in 78 Game requiring 17 "Steppenwolf" -i mysteries no equipment wife ; 22 Mala 82 What a mess 18 Shade of white -.23 Part of the ' 83 KFC order 24 "The Bottle " . As the evening came to a close, there was the customary audience demand for more, which he took in stride, brushing it off with something some-thing like "What a facade! Sure I'm gonna do another." He did several more, in fact, the last being a salute to individual U.S. states titled "Survivors." And he added "Can you hear me in Utah, you are the country..." to the last chorus. Following the concert, he spent time talking and signing autographs with his fans. He's very approach able and as charming and person able off stage as on. The Wooden Dog Celebrity Series is a great opportunity to see some wonderful performers in a small, intimate venue. In addition to John Stewart, we were also treated to a pre-concert social hour featuring featur-ing talented vocalistpianist Mary , Beth Gelbuda and the mixed-media' artwork of Bill Kranstover, both ; Park City locals. i More concerts are in the works, according to producer Randy Barton, and a full line-up will be publicized. Confirmed at this time is the Rev. Billy C. Wirtz on Jan. 10. 'More Dogs' features 1 0 years of Tom Clyde Continued from B-1 Publisher's Press of Salt Lake City treated his 160-page freshman fresh-man effort with the same professionalism pro-fessionalism as it would a larger book. For the book's cover art, Clyde commissioned a piece from former Park City High School art teacher and renowned local artist, David Chaplin. Further ensuring the book would "be a real Park City product," Clyde asked local Nancy Hull to handle its layout. Additionally, he says, Parkite Jan Sloan, who owns Books and Beyond in Midway, offered critical advice about marketing products and pricing. "It's still pretty scary, lying in bed and night and thinking you might not sell any of the 2,000 books, Clyde confesses. But, in typical Tom Clyde candor, he points out the bright side he could always use them to heat his home. "More Dogs on Main Street" will sell for $12 at local bookstores, and for Clyde, who has placed many of the columns in their historical context, the book should serve as a guide for marking memorable events in Park City over the past decade, as the town went from near ruin to a prosperous resort community. "The only constant," writes Clyde in the introduction, "is that there are still dogs on Main Street. "They just have better pedigrees." Let's keep your business rolling.
