Show 7 Saturday, June 6, 1998 The Park Record B-11 Pork Record Traveler m ' i s is 3 W i- StThomas, Martinique, Grenada via the Panama Canal by Bev Sincock RECORD GUEST WRITER At the end of April, tired of the overcast skies, snow flurries, rain and cold temperatures, Paul and I decided to take a break and go on a cruise through the Panama Canal. We have cruised ofteh, but it had been a couple of years since we had been on a week's cruise. We both wondered how we would do on an 11-day cruise. We choose the Dawn Princess for various reasons. The first because of the high satisfaction satisfac-tion rate of Princess passengers, and secondly I wanted to experience experi-ence the "Grand Class Cruising" of Princess. Our departure was from San Juan, Puerto Rico and we would disembark in Acapulco, Mexico. Our ports would be St. Thomas, . Martinique, Grenada, Caracas, Curacao and Acapulco. Two-and-a-half days at sea and one day transiting the Panama Canal. We also spent the eleventh night on the ship in Acapulco. The one-year-old Dawn Princess is the sister ship to the Sun Princess and Sea Princess. These ships have been rated as five-star superliners. The Dawn Princess's Grand Plaza atrium is dazzling with glass elevators, floating staircases, staircas-es, stained-glass domes and ocean-view windows. The ship has over 400 private balconies. When Princess says you can dine where and when you want, they mean it. No other cruise line offers the freedom of round-the-clock dining with so many different differ-ent places to dine or snack 24 hours a day. There are five different dining areas, including two intimate dining din-ing rooms and a 24-hour international interna-tional food court and other alternative alter-native restaurants. Imagine a pizzeria with the charm of Italy and pizza just like those we have had in Italy. There are two different theaters the-aters playing nightly entertainment entertain-ment so you can see what you want, when you want. It may be a splashy Broadway-style musical, an equally intriguing Las Vegas extravaganza, or a fabulous cabaret revue. This is a small part of fthe entertainment since the ship offers everything from a Iargf casino to dance bands to first-run movies. Plus there is a teen center and video arcade. A special activity we enjoyed during our cruise was the daily art auction. In the afternoons on the days we sailed, Princess would have an art auction. It was a fabulous way to learn about popular artists and their works and try to be the owner of a particular painting at a reasonable reason-able price. Since opening in 1914, the Panama Canal has been considered consid-ered an amazing feat of engineering, engineer-ing, acclaimed the world over as one of mankind's greatest triumphs. tri-umphs. The ultimate cost was $387 million and thousands thou-sands of lives. The Panama Canal 'is 50 miles long from deep water in the Atlantic to deep water in the Pacific. It was cut through one of the narrowest and lowest saddles of the long, mountainous Isthmus that joins the North and South .American continents. It requires about nine hours for an average ship to transit the canal, although it took us 12 hours for various reasons. During this brief time, we had the opportunity to see one of the modern wonders in operation. Its principal physical features are the two terminal ports, short sections sec-tions of the channel at either end of sea level, the three sets of twin locks, Gatun Lake and Gaillard Cut. Our ship was raised 85 feet in a continuous flight of three steps at Gatun Locks. Each lock chamber cham-ber is 110 feet wide and 1,000 feet long. Our ship had two feet to spare on each side, which created "a tigrif squeeze. . From Gatun Lake we traveled for 23.5 miles to the north end of Gaillard Cut, before we entered engineering Peterson Engineering Consulting Engineers and Land Surveyors 25 years, experience Phone: )1 -255-3503 Fax: 801-255-4502 Construction Staking, lot surveys, topographic surveys. I was looking forward to going through the Panama Canal, but I never imagined the excitement during this day. The experience of going through the locks, the beautiful scenery and the excitement of workers and people along portions por-tions of the crossing added to the intensity. People come from all points of the compass to take a Panama Canal cruise. They all sail for the different reasons. Some want to pack as much sightseeing and shopping into two weeks as possible. possi-ble. Some want to soak up the sun on fabled shores. Others choose to spend much of their time on board enjoying the relaxation relax-ation that can be had. The Dawn Princess is designed to fulfill everyone's wishes. We did a little of everything, but enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere where we did nothing more than turn the pages of a book and enjoy the sun and warmth.
