Luncheon will be served at noon preceded by an "attitude adjustment" hour hosted by the members of the Friends Executive Board. Following the luncheon prepared by DeSisto Catering and Morning Ray Bakery, Katharine Coles, professor of creative writing at Westminster College and author of The One Right Touch, will read excerpts from her award-winning , publication. Coles will also be autographing copies of her books, which may be purchased at the luncheon. Tickets are available at the Library and from any member of the Library Friends Executive Board. The $20 ticket will also include the 1994 membership in the Friends of the Park City Library. Tickets must be purchased in advance. In response to many requests, the Friends will once again offer for sale at the luncheon, "Li-Berry Jam," and "Library" wildflower seed packets. Proceeds from the luncheon and from all sales will add to the growing list of amenities the Friends have been able to provide for the new Library. Some of the recent additions include a globe for the children's wing, additional science and literature editions for both the children and adult wings, and books on tape and videotapes. Friends efforts have enabled the library staff to develop the children's read-a-thons and a brown bag book club, and have provided the staff with volunteers who assist with the day-to-day operation of the Library, freeing the professional staff for more technical duties. For information regarding the luncheon andor the Friends organization, contact Jo Duthie, 649-6655, or Jane Washington, 649-1213. GiLTONERay-OfiOfr As temperatures rise, so does the number of children and adults riding bicycles. Each year 1200 Americans are killed in bicycling accidents, and more than 500,000 are injured. Three-fourths of the deaths are caused by head injury. These injuries can be reduced by 85 percent, just by wearing a helmet ' Helmets should always be worn every time you or your child rides a bicycle. You can find quality helmets for around $26. The price of a helmet is much lower than a lost life, or years of rehabilitation after a head injury. Bicycle helmets are constructed of expanded polystyrene foam that absorbs the energy of an impact to lessen or prevent head injury. Many helmets have a hard outer lexan (plastic) shell to protect against collision with a sharp object. When evaluating a helmet to purchase, the Utah Safety Council suggests that you consider safety, fit, and looks. Safety: Two private organizations, American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Snell Memorial Foundation test and rate helmets. Snell tests are more demanding and, unlike ANSI, they test samples of certified helmets to ensure they meet their standards. Unless the helmet has an official green Snell or red ANSI sticker, you can't be sure it will protect you. Fit: The helmet should fit snugly right on top of the head. A helmet that moves forward or back enough to expose the head may not protect you. Choose a helmet with sufficient sizing pads and adjustable straps to attain the correct fit. Weight of the helmet is important when fitting toddlers. Looks: If you don't like the way it looks you most likely won't wear it. A helmet is a one-shot item. Once it's been damaged in an accident, or in any other way, you should replace iteven if the damage is not obvious. Some helmet companies will replace a helmet free or for a small fee once it has been damaged in an accident V.
