Show 1" 7 '1 I 1 T 7 '1 1 i The Park Record D Section B Thursday, April 1 4, 1 994 D Page B7 Two vidoes set the stage for spring fever g by MICHELLE JAMES jj Record guest writer Jesus Christ Superstar Starring Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson , Directed by Norman Jewison J MCA Home Video 1984 f With the arrival of spring , 5 (sometime soon, I hope) and Easter J eggs still in the refrigerator, I was in the mood for videos that were fitting for the season. So, this week I have suggestions for more 5 reverent viewing. ' Jesus Christ Superstar (G)is t the story of Christ's last week on Earth and his crucifixion. However this version, originally a '70s rock opera, is presented from Judas' point of view with tanks representing Roman guards and jets as angels. 5 Ted Neeley portrays Christ brilliantly as a sad yet strong man who captivates all and Carl J-Anderson as Judas Iscariot gives his ' character depth and great remorse. 5-This is one representation you 'won't soon forget. .Some may say this adaptation is sacrilegious, but if viewed with an open mind and a general J understanding of the Biblical events, it's easy to understand that "-this is simply another way of presenting a beautiful story. Andrew Lloyd Webber masterfully sets this story to music and Tim Rice provides words that convey a clear message and deep meaning. With musical direction by Andre Previn, this video is something different that still has a familiar feel to it. The Last Temptation of Christ Starring Willem Dafoe, Harvey Keitel, Barbara Hershey and David Bowie ''Directed by Martin Scorsese - MCA Home Video 1988 Let me preface my opinion of this movie by saying that I never got a chance to see this when it was first released in theaters. With all ... ,i.the commotion that was caused by the events in the film, it didn't stay out long enough; but, living only ? minutes from the studio that made it, I was very aware of all the Pitt Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson in Jesus Christ Superstar. The bilk don't stop when you're sick or hurt and can't work. The Last Temptation of Christ (R) is the story of Christs' last week on Earth and his crucifixion. Sound familiar? Well, this movie presents Christ as an ordinary man who is troubled by strange voices in His head and a need to find then-origin then-origin and meaning. Jesus (Willem Dafoe) convinces his friend Judas (Harvey Keitel) .that He must go out into the desert to search for the meaning of His torment While on His quest, Jesus encounters many circumstances that give cause to Him acting out the Parables that were foretold. He also finds Mary Magdalene (Barbara Hershey) and eventually is confronted by Pilot (David Bowie). This movie, presents Christ as a man who was unsure of His destiny and only through His desire for the truth does He realize His true identity and path in life. The story follows the Bible's telling, but you needn't know anything about the events to follow the story or to .enjoy .the movie. Many people had trouble dealing I with the fact that Christ was portrayed as an ordinary man, but I think that by showing Him thus and by showing what He sacrificed for humanity only serves to make His sacrifice even more monumental and meaningful. You'll have to draw your own conclusion about the end of the film; which caused all the commotion in the first place. I will 'only say that if viewed with an open mind, Jesus Christ Superstar and The Last Temptation of Christ are two different interpretations of a fabulous story that should be taken for what they are . . . entertainment. Continued from B3 It's not the Coens' fault The old screwball comedies worked 60 years ago because old Hollywood possessed a veritable anthill of sharp, skilled character actors. 5 They could score a laugh with one line and were already recognizable to audiences, so-to create a comic atmosphere, all you had to do was throw five or six of these old reliables into the background of a scene. The Hudsucker Proxy also creates the fairy-tale atmosphere of those old movies like It's a Wonderful Life we have a hero contemplating suicide and heavenly intervention. In this case, though, the movie yeers into weirdness with the notion that Norvill Bates' fate is influenced by two cosmic janitors in the Hudsucker building one who is benevolent and wise (Bill Cobbs) and the other representing Doom, or something. The most unfortunate think about The Hudsucker Proxy is that the Coens don't have to imitate old-fashioned screwball comedy. They have already invented their own in Raising Arizona one of my favorite films of the '80s, and a film that avoided the mistakes that The Hudsucker Proxy makes. Instead of imitation 30s dialogue. Raising's characters had their own way of talking a blend of redneck poetry and modern psycho-babble. And the cast included actors (Nicholas Cage, Holly Hunter, and John Goodman) who weren't overwhelmed by the direction. Devoted fans of the Coens may want to see The Hudsucker Proxy . But afterward, rent a tape of Raising Arizona. Or for that matter, Blood Simple.
