Heber, Reel 1 The Park Record Section B by RICK BROUGH Record guest writer The Hudsucker Proxy it-kill Starring Tim Robbins, Paul Newman, Jennifer Jason Leigh Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen Warner Brothers 1994 ;. VfithThe Hudsucker Proxy brothers Joel and Ethan Coen are . trying to recreate a classic screwball comedy from the days of old Hollywood (with some Frank Capra thrown in). When the picture ; premiered at the Sundance Film . Festival in Park City last January, ; the Coens half-jokingly said they were also refuting a rule that comedies don't work on big sets or with a lot of brown colors. Said star Tim Robbins, "This is a big, brown comedy." ' l They should have worried more about another rule: "Orson Welles never made a wacky farce." The Coens are confirmed Wellesians precocious film freaks who love to show what they can do With lighting, big, bizarre sets, special effects and an energetic, acrobatic camera. I: The Coens can be excellent film makers on their own terms, but they're harkening back to an old movie tradition where the comic performer (whether it was Cary Grant, Bob Hope or Groucho) took -center stage. In Hudsucker, the Coens from behind the camera are the biggest screwball exhibitionists of them all. Their style often looks as if Orson Welles was assigned to create a Warner Bros. Looney Tune, and he decided to make one with live actors. Their latest movie begins with corporate tycoon Waring Hudsucker (Charles Durning) who's sitting in a board meeting on the 44th floor, when he suddenly climbs up on the table, scampers (town it like it was a runway, and hurtles out the window. In typical cartoon fashion we follow Hudsucker all the way down; we can even see him waving pedestrians out of the way before the final splat. Scheming vice-president Sidney J. Mussburger (Paul Newman) nowi. hastobuyupHudsucker'S outstanding stock, but to do that the value of the company has to sink Xn the stock market. Their new president has to be some idiot who 4 JiC hi l .III kill! H' 1 " ''MiH. r i 1 1 1 r i n . . Cinema Review Tim Robbins and Paul Newman star in The Hudsucker Proxy. can drive the company into the ground. that's the cue for the hero to enter. Norvill Barnes (Tim Robbins) is a graduate from the Muncie, Ind., School of Business Administration Awho's working in the Hudsucker nail room. He has a mysterious Big Dream, which he explains only ly holding up a piece of scratch paper with a geometrically perfect circle. "You knpw...for kids!" he says. When Barnes is made president, he's quickly labeled as the idiot of Wall Street. But then he unveils his new invention the Hula Hoop. C'lt's lightweight, cheap," he says, "and filled with sand to make it a pleasurable experience") The movie is supposed to be set in 1958, but the Hula Hoop is the only indication of that Otherwise most of the atmosphere is archetypal '30s. TTie movie presents the odd notion that, in the age of Huntley-Brinkley, the news is being produced by a pack of gum-snapping, wise-cracking reporters who look like they should .. be covering the Lindbergh 1 kidnapping. ' The actors never quite surmount the challenge of imitating the screwball style, while being overwhelmed by the Coens flamboyant direction. (To be exact, Joel is the director, Ethan is the producer and they both wrote the script with Sam Raimi.) The most distinctive performer is Jennifer Jason Leigh, simply because she's doing a blatant Katharine Hepburn imitation. She's supposed to be the kind of gal reporter who talks at break-neck speed and refers to herself in the third person. ("Yeah, me, Amy Archer, I'll get this story!") As her editor, John Mahoney talks so fast he's unintelligible and you're not sure that's supposed to be a joke. One of the movie's more endearing sights is Robbins demonstrating the Hula Hoop. But as the naive goofball who becomes a hero, he just can't follow in the . footsteps of James Stewart and Gary Cooper, who originally played that kind of hero. Paul Newman is miscast as the fat-cat villain. The Coens also attempt to fill the movie with colorful bit players stuffy corporate executives, harassed mail room workers, cabbies who have seen it all, smart-aleck reporters and snooty society matrons. They all make about as much impression as the cast of an Alka-Seltzer commercial. continued on B7 m PARK CITY VIDEO 1821 SIDEWINDER DRIVE PROSPECTOR SQUARE (Next to Naco Mama's) Movies Camcorders TVs Video Players Games Sun-Thurs 11-9 Fri-Sat 11-10 649-2572' ' ' -i..--- NOW PLAYING Cool Runnings Malice Polar Bear King Age of Innocence Beverly Hillbillies Carlito's Way Bronx Tale Joy Luck Club Dazed & Confused Home of our Own Striking Distance What's Love Got To Do With It Undercover Blues Judgement Night So IMarried an Axe Murderer Manhattan Murder Mystery The Good Son Demolition Man Gettysburg The Fugitive Much Ado About Nothing Son-In-Law Needful Things Boxing Helena For Love or Money Man Without a Face Coming Aoril 20 Another Stakeout Flesh & Bone Mr. Jones Ruby in Paradise (&tmjFBmvcow Test Prep Just One Weekend!
