Show Oregon EPrrarmtts The Park Record P Section B Contributions from Park City kids Thursday, January 27, 1994 D Page B10 Here are some compositions from Ms. Wiss' 5 th graders at Treasure Mountain Middle School. THE HIKE by Jessica Weiss Aspens raining leaves down on us and crunching beneath our feet, we came to the top of a rise in the trail. I caught my breath for spread out before me was a glorious carpet of reds, golds, yellows, and oranges in an ocean of trees a picture-perfect picture-perfect view. I stood there for what seemed like hours, taking in this phenomenal spectrum, before moving on. on fire! My brother and my dad ran back and forth with buckets of water until it finally went out. The fire was loud and there were snaps... the wood shifted occasionally. Meanwhile, I ran...got the hose and sprayed the tree. Its leaves were on fire but they went out easily. Soon sap came oozing out of the tree. It sprayed the tree on its trunk to stop it from oozing. It was then I realized what a big fire it was. And with that, I ran and got the marshmallows. THE TERROR TROLL TH E COTTAG E by Kara Beecher by Peter Blais We had extra wood from certain projects, like the shed we had built in the woods. Tears came to my eyes when I realized that we had sold this special place. I didn't want to sell it, but it was in Canada and wewere moving out of the country. Dad wanted the extra money. To get rid of the wood we had some fires. They were about five feet tall and five feet wide. The last one was about ten feet wide and eleven feet tall even when it wasn't burning. We knew a match and a lot of newspaper would start this one, but my dad had a more dramatic idea. He went to our shed in the woods, and came back with a gas can! He walked past us and poured it on the wood. Mom was swimming next to the fire beside our dock. Dad got some newspapers and twisted them like a torch. He hit the end of it and threw it on the gas! There was a great explosion. It took us awhile to notice, but the top of our dock was Once there was a troll that was fat, his cheeks were squished about his eyes with fat and he had scars with blood. His fingers were crusty and moldy with holes and his teeth were crooked and yellow. He wore skin tight faded green pants with holes and a tight-fitting orange T-shirt T-shirt with com, and other things he ate, on his shirt. He had 10 toes on each foot to scratch up trees and tear up cars. His hair was jet black and he went around the village scaring people. Then one day he saw a woman with her children heading toward the village. He walked over and asked in an unfriendly voice, "Where are you going?" The woman looked frightened and ran away. Everyone was afraid of the terror troll. He was mean and unfriendly. Then one day he was taking a walk on an old bridge when it fell and the troll fell in with a splash! That was the last of the tenor troll, but there are tales that he now lives under that bridge haunting anyone who passes by. THE GARDENS by Jenny Meakins 'Today, are we going to Thomas Jefferson's house and gardens?" I asked my mom and dad during our 1993 UEA weekend vacation in Virginia. They said yes, so I was excited because he had tons of gardens that he had grown all his life (which was a lot of time). I was standing in front of the big dome house with three columns that Mr. Jefferson had built. My family and I went on a tour of the house. I walked through a gate and stretched before me, left and right, were beautiful vegetable and fruit gardens. There was a purple bean arbor, teepees that peas grew on, grape vines, pumpkins and almost every vegetable and fruit you could imagine. Right in the middle of the spectacular oceans of blooms was a small brick gazebo where Mr. Jefferson used to read and watch the progress of his plants. It was one of the most enchanting sights I have ever seen. ROCK by Andy Orr It was Saturday. I was playing with Alan in our backyard. (I can't remember what we were playing. ) And my friends Todd, Drew and Shawn came into our backyard and we did not know that. They said, "I hate you." I said, "I hate you too!" I didn't really mean it but he did. Shawn threw a rock at me. It hit me right below my left eye! The left side of my head was red with dark blood. Alan ran and told my mom! My mom ran out of the house and screamed "Andy are you OK?" (By this time my friends were gone.) I said, "Yes." I was crying! My mom thought I lost an eye. My mom was scared! She washed off my face with a washcloth and said, "Come on Andy, we are going to find out who did this." I could not see very well. We ran across the street to Todd's house first. He didn't do it. Shawn did it! I do not know what happened to Shawn. I had a big black eye! And I still have the scar! SCHWARTSNAGER TROLL by Zach Benedict It started out on a cool summer's day, birds chirping, grass swaying, and hawks flying swiftly in the cool breeze. A little boy named Arnold was skipping in the green forests of Norway, doing an errand for his mom. Near by was the crazy old lady, who seemed to have had great powers. Looking into her crystal ball she spotted the boy! The little boy tripped over a stone and hurt his foot. He got up very painfully and started limping the wrong way! Later he found a little, old, ugly cottage. It was the crazy lady's cottage! Curious, he walked in. "Anybody home?" asked the little boy. No answer. Still asking the same question, no answer. They boy got sleepy and dozed off into a deep sleep. The lady came out of her hiding place (the closet). She tied him to the bed, so when he woke up he wouldn't get away. During his deep sleep she made a potion, a troll potion. The lady was strong because she took pills that made her strong. The boy woke up, forgetting where he was. He saw food on the table which looked something like soup. He started to go get the food but he was stuck because of the ropes. The lady came out and said, "I'm going to eat you for supper." The boy squirmed out of the ropes and ran for the door. But the tough lady caught him. She forced him to eat the soup which would turn him into a troll. While they were busy fighting, the crazy lady knocked over the strong pills and they fell into the soup. The little kid's face went splat in the soup. He was out of breath so he sucked in. Instead of air going in, the soup went in! The crazy lady didn't see him drink the soup! A minute later he turned into a troll. The lady laughed until she saw huge bumps growing on his arms and legs. The kid (Schwartsnager Troll) picked her up, carried her outside and threw her into the river. Every now and then listen very hard and you'll hear Schwartsnager Troll crying in the distance. THE SAD DAY by Stephanie Geyer I never liked packing, it gave me the chills. My stepdad, Guy, went to get the U-Haul. I didn't want to go with him, so I stayed at my friend's house. We had bacon, eggs and orange juice. It felt good to my stomach. The hot cocoa made my throat feel good. My mom called for me to help pack. The day had come when we would move from Washington to Utah. My friend Mallory helped me pack up. It felt lonely to see all of my belongings out of my room and stuffed into the U-Haul. I asked my mom why we had to move. She didn't want to tell me. I never really liked moving, but it was the one time in my life that I had to move. Maybe it would be fun, but it would never be the same. We just got done packing when I asked my mom, Toni, if I could go down to Mallory 's house. She said I could, so we went down to her house. I had only three hours to play. We didn't have a lot to do in that short amount of time. Just then my mom called. Time goes by fast when you don't want it to. Now was the time. We all walked up slowly, so slow a snail could have raced us and won. Finally, we got there and took group pictures. It was time to go so we hugged and I went to go get into the U-Haul. We started to slowly move. I had tears in my eyes; so did my best friend and her parents. THE TROLL by Daniel Mabey There was a troll who was 1,000 years old. He lived in Norway in a deep dark forest He liked to eat children. He lived in the pine trees and when children walked by he jumped out and grabbed them with his big claws. He had one eye because his other eye got cut out by another troll. One day there was a child who was skipping through the forest and she was about at the end of the forest, when a troll jumped out of a pine tree toward her. She glanced at him and screamed. "I'm going to eat you all up!" yelled the troll. "You will be my supper!" He took the girl back to his home in the pine trees. He tied her up and roasted her in the fire.
