The group known as "Citizens Assuring Accountability" was formed to insure that this recent tragedy does not go unresolved. The groups' initial members are the owners of the eight murdered does but is open to any concerned citizens who feel as we do, that this matter must be resolved with more than just the passage of time. We accomplished many things at our first meeting held on Jan. 18, 1994. The group elected, jointly, Linda Paul, Terri Silva and Ellen Poppe as its spokespersons. Jim Stith was unanimously elected the group's legal council and it was decided that any cash awards would be donated to local animal assistance groups. Also discussed was the collected evidence now in the hands of the authorities and still awaiting conclusive forensic analysis. The group's primary directive is to make sure the authorities move expeditiously to complete the forensic analysis of the collected evidence and then, assuming the testing confirms the evidence as being incriminating, to make sure that charges are brought against the guilty party(s). Guet Editorial A voice from the community Another matter of concern the group discussed is the many recent acts of vandalism against a suspect and the suspect's residence. Although many of us in the community have strong feelings on this matter, we wish to ask everyone to exercise restraint in expressing those emotions. It is our belief that such actions, although reflective of how important this matter is, are in and of themselves, harmful to the community. It would be a tragedy if a brick going through a bedroom window seriously injured an innocent renter or anyone else. Further, in our system of justice a suspect is innocent until proven guilty. Let us let the legal system work as it was intended to. We would like to encourage the public to not let the passage of time diminish the importance of resolving this matter. To those of us most directly affected by this tragedy, it seems, at times, like yesterday that our children were so violently taken from us. Anyone wishing to make donations in memory of the dogs who died Megra, Sadie, Hoople, Rhoadie, Ben, Shoto, Navajo Joe and Staggerlee can send their gifts to the Friends of the Animals where the funds will be used to place and care for homeless dogs and cats.
