Show r The Park Record II Section A Thursday, January 27, 1994 U Page A7 PCEF proposes fundraising changes BHBHBHBHBBHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHBHHBl E I j" The Park City School Board .heard proposed guidelines for Ifundraising activities Wednesday Inight at the Jan. 25 work session. ! Peg Anderson representing the Park City Education Foundation Iproposed that each school create a jcommittee to coordinate fundraising with the PCEF. Under the proposed guidelines the committee would be made up of a minimum of an administrator, a Parent-Teacher OrganizationCommunity Council representative, a teacher and when appropriate a student. "Our goal is to coordinate a school district calendar based on the proposals submitted to the PCEF." This would prevent different groups from competing for monies at the same time. To help in planning for the coming year the PCEF would organize a "fund ra sing fair" where companies would display their fundraising programs. This would allow committees to choose the best fundraising programs for their groups. The guidelines that would govern schools, limit to three the number of fundraisers per year. Exemptions from the guidelines include: service related fundraisers, elementary school Halloween carnivals, T-shirts and other paraphernalia that promotes school spirit and PTOCommunity Council dues. Students spend time in the Tetons by CHELSEA DECKERT and jCAMILLEBIRD Record guest writers ;; This was our final trek to the ; summit of Coyote Rock. What lay ' ahead of us was unknown. The j Wyoming weather had weakened us, ! but determination pushed us forward. iThe Grand Tetons lay majestically i waiting in the distance, and we knew .'we had outwitted Coyote Rock when ! we saw their peaks. While taking a panoramic look ! around and basking in the feeling of reaching the top, Camielle and I recalled the most important thing we learned during the week, "When in doubt, keep your hands on your knees." ; Park City High School students ; and staff spent the week of Jan. 3-8 at the Teton Science School, just ! outside of Jackson Hole, Wyo. For , one week, students and teachers were able to set aside differences and approach the school as one cohesive unit. For seven days, they ate together, lodged together and skied j together. j The Teton Science School is a i fully operational project providing I for all ages with an educational I experience in nature. Conservation ! wise, the school is equipped with an ! outdoor freezer, solar paneled energy j sources, energy efficient light bulbs j and "whoha's," (a whoha is a small, j three-compartment Tupperware container used to keep lunch items dry). The daily schedule began at early dawn with a mad dash for the showers and then the dining hall. .or r .IK mil j ijij 3 Park City High School participants in the Teton Science School: (back row, left to right) Cami Bird, Brandon Cunningham, Carrie Fey and Sam Cherrington. (front row, left to right) Leslie Smith, Rick Graue and Catherine Owens. Morning meals consisted of many nutrient-rich items, including everyone's favorite: mush. Then, participants made lunch and were off to the library to master the arts of ornithological observation, botanical brilliance, tracking techniques and scatological scrutinizing. Later in the day, they headed out for a ski and a lesson in nature. They also studied avalanche safety, animal tracking and ways to not surprise a moose. Evening activities included lectures, dinner and meditations. The events varied throughout the week as they visited the Elk Refuge and the Murie Museum, and enjoyed a special performance by students Scott Wilson and Camielle Bird. According to some of the students, 'TSS is unique, educational and surrounded by beauty. It was a place where we had time to reorganize and regroup. While there, we came to appreciate and respect the balance between man and nature. There are many secrets we still have to learn from the Earth, and the Teton Science School gave us the chance to listen." Chelsea Decker t and Camille Bird are PCHS students.
