The Michael Martin Murphey concert at Deer Valley on Aug.l was a night to sing along with old cowboy songs, listen to Michael spin yarns about horses and friends, and clap in time. And even though the initial selections of Copland's work from Rodeo were pleasing, The Utah Symphony proved they can be one hell of a back up band when need be. Before Murphey took the stage the symphony added Bernstein's theme for the movie The Magnificent Seven. Conductor Robert Henderson teased the audience he had earlier asked to not smoke on the dry grassy hillside. "I hope this music doesn't a trigger a response in all you smokcrs-this music was used for those Marlboro commercials." Michael came out for three selections before intermission which turned into four-- his classics, "Tonight We Ride"," Carolina in the Pines", and "Wildfire" (" I got on this mount in 1975 and its been good mount ever since"). Then, not on the program, he threw in his latest hit, "Cowboy Logic" He altered the words there.. .said if you sit int he middle long enough you could wind up the nominee for the Democrats or a Bureau of Land Management official. He ended with an impressive yodel. The second half of the show he dedicated to his good friend and former agent Parkite Norman Weiss. He wandered through cowboy poetry, a version of "Home on the Range" that made ark LOCATION $229,500 r r - , - iH -i I v, . PARK CITY CLASS 649-ttOl "SERVING THE PARK CITY AREA SINCE 1975" high-stepping "Tyin' Knots In The Devil's Tail" that had Murphey kicking up his heels. When he crooned "Red River Valley," the eightysomething woman next to m'e on the blanket from Kerrville, Texas sang along and then clasped her hands together at the end and said, "Oh, that was good," in such a fashion that you knew she'd heard the song mangled a time or two. In the end, Murphey sang a mournful "Streets of Laredo" walked to the edge of the stage, slowly put on his duster and his cowboy hat as the symphony continued with the song, got down on one knee in a prayerful stance, and then walked off the stage. The crowd called him back, and for his encore he convinced audience members and fellow musicians, The Sons of the San Juaquin, to join him. Their harmony was just the right note on which to end.
